    hi guys again,

I’m going to need a good CPU cooler because I’m only using my stock cooler on my amd athlon xp 2600+, i almost crapped myself a while ago when i bumped my system from 1.9ghz to 2.4ghz, it was running a little unstable but get this... the CPU temperature was at 90 degrees Celsius  , so i backed it off immediatly, i know there is heaps off coolers out there but i want to know what the BEST reasonable priced FAN cooler is?

    thanks in advance

Thermalright SI-97a is about the best bang for your buck, add a 92mm fan pushing about 56 cfm or more & it will keep you cool
    I like panaflo fans I'm running a H1b

Keep inmind regardless your choice for CPU HS & F, you'll need good case airflow to reap the benifits.

    Thermal Interface Material

well air flow isnt a problem for me because i do not have the side of the case on at anytime (it gets to hot with it on)

i know of a good cooler it is called a desktop fan you know the little fans you buy from the store, that you put on your desk or nightstand and has adjustable speeds i use those.

You have to exercise caution when using desk fans next to your computer. Many people have been frantic over HD issues and flickering display on their monitors, going so far as to taking their computers to a repair shops only to discover the problem was caused by having a small desk fan to close to their computer.

This of course does not always happen and the change if it occurs, does not always start right away. If you do notice something is off after you have started using a desk fan, move it way from the desk/computer to see if things return to normal before you panic.;):)

As dans data and various magazines have shown, the differences between different thermal pastes (TIM) is only a few degrees - if 4Celcius is the difference between stable and crashing then you need to re-evaluate your cooling altogether.
90Celcius is far too hot. A much bigger heat sink and fan is gong to be required. The XP cpu's shouldn't be exposed to prolonged temperatures above 70C as a general rule.
My XP2400 is running at 2400MHz and has been for over a year 24/7 while folding and, due to room temperature, it varies between 51C and 54C

90 degrees celcius:eek: ,I dont see how your cpu could have reached that temp without increasing the voltage to an insanely high level,I'd check out your voltages:confused: or you have a problem with your current heatsink install, you say it reached this temp with the side of your case off aswell:confused:

I'd first try reinstalling your current heatsink with some fresh 'paste' and installing some case fans,As ASUS said if you dont have airflow through your case a new heatsink wont make any difference, having the side of the case of only gives you a small amount of air convection,it isnt as good as having cool air blown through the case,if you dont want to cut up your case buy a new one with more fans

I also agree with abby, deskfans are just for keeping you cool or talking into to sound like a Darlek 'If you'v never seen doctor who forget it:) '
