Definitely Infected! Please Help

    Hi, family computer infected. noticed after Daughter noted a few strange pop ups this week, so I came here. Other than that, slightly slower than normal but nothing untoward.
    I've done the Read and run first and logs attached below.
    What is it? Is it Serious? Can it be cleaned?

    Dorkbot is an information stealing trojan and that is what you have. You need to change all online passwords and all passwords for this PC. Yes it is serious and yes we should be able to clean it.

    You are almost a year out of date with MGtools. You are not supposed to keep old versions. You always need to use the current version.


    Uninstall the below programs. If you do not find them or they will not uninstall, just keep going.
    Java(TM) 6 Update 30



    Now install the current version of Sun Java from:

    Please download OTM by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.
    • Run OTM.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, Win7 or Win8, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).
    • Copy the lines from the below codebox to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C
      (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy): Do not include the word Code: which is just a title line of
      the code box

    • Return to OTM, right click in the Paste List of Files/Folders to Move window (under the yellow bar
      ) and choose Paste.
    • Now click the large http://forums.majorgeeks.com/chaslang/images/MoveIt!.png button.
    • If OTM asks to reboot your computer, allow it to do so. The report should appear in Notepad after the reboot.
    • Close OTM.
    Now navigate to the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles folder ( assuming your Windows drive is C). This is where your log will be
    saved in the form of Date and Time mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log. Just look for the most recent .log file. Attach
    this log file to your next message.



    Now please download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.
    • Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
    • Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista or Seven, right-mouse click it and select Run as Administrator.
    • The tool will open and start scanning your system.
    • Note: That JRT may reset your home page to a google default so you will need to restore your home page setting if this happens.
    • Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
    • On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
    • Attach JRT.txt to your next message.
    Now download the current version of MGtools and save it to your root folder. Overwrite your previous MGtools.exe file with this one.

    Run MGtools.exe ( Note: If using Vista, Win7, or Win8, make sure UAC is still disabled. Also don't double click on it, use right click and select Run As Administrator )


    Now attach the below logs:
    • the C:\_OTM\MovedFiles log
    • the JRT.TXTlog
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
    Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    Ok. Java update uninstalled.
    Java Sun 64 bit installed.
    Programs run as requested.
    I don't know how things are running yet as I've only been on this site so, Ill see how it goes.

    Yes that is what I was expecting due to the nature of the infection you have. And that is also why I wanted to scan again. ;)

    Shutdown all other applications and run Hitman Pro again. This time allow it to cleanup/remove all the malware it detects. IMMEDIATELY reboot after it finishes the removal. After reboot, run a new scan with Hitman Pro and attach this new log again. Keep surfing to an absolute minimum while we are fixing this. DO NOT allow anything else to be downloaded/installed other than what I request.

    Ok, been running esat for 4 hours now. Ran ok upto 52 percent, then very very slow. Been stuck on 87 percent for 15 minutes now. I guess I'll go to bed and see if it's completed in the morning. So far scanned 102096 files and found 23 threats, most of which seem to read Win32/Spy.Zbot.A.A.O Trojan.

    Neither keyboard nor mouse has been touched since scan began as per your instructions. If not complete in the morning I will try to rerun and attach log.

    Okay it found a bunch of the same items as Hitman Pro and it found one we already deleted with OTM with were not problems. Now let's do the below.

    1. Now goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click ( if running Vista, Win7, or Win 8 Right Click and Run As Administrator ) on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    2. If you are running Win 8, Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below to flush restore points:
      • Refer to the instructions for your WIndows version in this link: Disable And Enable System Restore​
      • What we want you to do is to first disable System Restore to flush restore points some of which could be infected.
      • Then we want you to Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    3. Now rerun the Eset Online Scan again and attach a new log. I want to make sure that it is not still finding the same malware.
    I ran the MGclean.bat program above to cleanup any stuff we have quarantine so that it would not be detected as a problem. Now we need to reinstall MGtools.


    Now download the current version of MGtools and save it to your root folder. Overwrite your previous MGtools.exe file with this one.

    Run MGtools.exe ( Note: If using Vista, Win7, or Win8, make sure UAC is still disabled. Also don't double click on it, use right click and select Run As Administrator )

    Now attach the below logs:
    • the ESETlog
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
    Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    Your logs are clean.

    Please explain what operations are slow! For example answer the below:
    • Is boot up slow?
    • Is shutdown slow?
    • Is browsing/surfing slow? If yes, also answer the below sub-questions
      • What type of connection to the internet do you use ( DSL, Cable, FIOS,etc)?
      • What browser are you using? Have tried more than one?
    • Is downloading slow?
    • Is running any/every application?
    • Is it also slow in safe boot mode?
    • Also are any processes showing in Task Manager to be using a lot of CPU time?
    • Anything else slow?

    First, many thanks, you all do a fantastic job here. In fact my sister reported that her laptop was in terrbile shape so, I'm gonna open a new thread for that probably when ive had a look at it.

    In reply to your query, boot up is OK, browser (Google Chrome) is just not as quick as I would expect, but nothing disastrous. I use this in preference to IE. Internet is fibre optic broadband.
    CPU usage varies erratically from 1% to 20%, although I don't know if this is OK or not. My problem with processes is that I have no idea what should be there and what shouldn't as my technical skill is nearly nil.

    You could try resetting it back to defaults ( see: ) You may just have added a bunch of extensions to it which caused it to get slower.

    Can be quite normal as process start and stop or as you load things or click on webpages....etc. When you are not doing anything at all ( that means not even a mouse movement or click) the System Idle process ( not really a process. It is just a calculation of the free time your CPU has. ) should typically be in the high 95 and above. If any software applications are doing updates ( even Windows ) then you will see some other process using a fairly large number and System Idle process will thus be lower.

    There was nothing abnormal in your logs.
