Been trying to defrag for 3 days! I downloaded win ME defrag and have been using sucessfully (my OS is 98). I have closed down all programs but I can't get past 21% defraged. Prior to this attempt defrag took minutes. below are the specifics of my system. On settings I do not ask defrag to rearange or check drive for errors.

Well you should "chk for errors" .Do a Scandisk first .then run your defrag.

Are you running Scan Disk beforehand? I used to get this alot with 98se. I also used the ME Defrag & it was so much faster than the original 98 defrag, but sometimes it would only get to 20-30% then stop. I noticed that when I ran Scan Disk beforehand it would run through & then would be fine for quite a while.

Also try running AdAware or SpyBot-Search & Destroy
to get rid of any bad stuff & jv16 Power Tools to get rid of any left over registry entries.

    jh,

I think you've got it right about setting DEFRAG not to check for errors. But the point is that you need to have SCANDISK check for errors FIRST every time you are going to run Defrag.

THAT's why you set Defrag not to check for errors: Scandisk already did that, and you already let Scandisk fix any errors it found.

Try defragging in safe mode because too many apps are usually using the hard drive in normal mode.

Kill the screen saver and if that doesn't work, boot to safe mode as Snake suggests.

The only things I can think of are these. Turn off all virus scanners, email virus scanners, firewalls, and any other programs that don't need to be running.

Is this right? You only have a total of 544kb of memory? If so you need to put some RAM in that thing. Either that, or you're confusing the amount of primary memory cache. It should be measured in Megabytes and not Kilobytes. Most likely you have 32Mb of RAM and a 512Kb cache (most likely in the L2 cache).

    Swatter,

Ya read it wrong cuz he had a little trouble with the spacebar:

    Look again ---

    384 Megabytes Installed Memory
    Slot '0' has 128 MB
    Slot '1' has 128 MB
    Slot '2' has 128 MB

But yer right: Before I run the Disk check or the Defrag (once a week, or so, cuz I in&out a LOT of sware), I unplug the cable, kill the firewall and anti-virus, kill everything in the "notification area" tray, kill the onscreen clock I run, and use TMgr to stop several backgrounders that don't show anything on the desktop or in the tray, and I don't NEED 'em when I'm scanning and defragging!

That may sound like a lot, but it only takes about 45 seconds, including unplugging the cable.

Then, when I finish the defrag of the system drive, I View Report, and if more than one file resisted defragging, I run defrag again. Once the first one has run, the defragger has no trouble with the resistant ones, and the second run always shows a clean slate in View Report.

Defragging twice always takes less than ten minutes; usually less than five. But I've only got about 4 GB on the sys drive.

    Then ya gotta reboot. Always.

There's a program called EndItAll (I think I read about it on this board) that lets you set things up so one click will shut down all the unnecessary things running on your system for downloading and for defragging. When all is done, you just reboot and all those things come back on. (Not exactly Geek wording, but that's what happens!) Just Google for EndItAll.

I should have metioned that I ran scan disk twice (once was through) and used "end it all" to close everything. The defrag was sucessful today ( I left it running while I went to work ) but I still don't know what took it so long this time.

My guess is that EndItAll DIDN'T. Something you didn't set EndItAll to close was interfering with your defragger. Look at your settings closely before you defrag again, and GOOD LUCK next time!

(And keep your anti-virus and anti-spyware up to date!)
