iv searched trough tons of forums and support sites but i couldnt find an answer to my question. iv found items similar to my problem but not quite what i was looking for.

    ill start with my specs:

im running win xp home edition sp2
    180 gb hdd
    16% freespace (29.87 gb)

    ok, now my problem.

i run the standard defrag that came with windows and after about 30 seconds i get the error that "Some files on ths volume could not be defragmented". iv checked them and they are not system files. some are files from games and others are video files i downloaded. iv ran defrag from safe mode, iv shut down all background apps, iv turned off and disconneted my internet and modem and i get the same problem. without downloading anything, how can i resolve this problem. i dont have a secondary drive and im not willing to dismantle my comp.

if it helps, the video files that wont defrag were downloaded from bitlord(a torrent downloading program incase you dont know it). I would get rid of them except it took me a amonth and a half to download, the set of files they're in takes up 42 gigs so i dont want to put them on discs (my dvd discs are only 4.7 gigs, ill use up at least 9 discs) and, on top of that, i downloaded them for my roommate (the files are an anime called inuyasha)

i need an answer kind of fast so ill post my email if you wish to contact me directly:

i greatly appreciate any and all help.

Well, you should do a little system cleaning before running defreg, i.e. ccleaner. Do you have ccleaner already? If so, it will give you a lot of additional space by removing temp files and cache files and other non-important crap and fragmented stuff. If you don't have it and don't care to get it, you could use disk cleanup that comes with Windows. It is not as efficient, but to use it go to control panel> performance and maintenance> free up space on your hard disk> select your drive and select accordingly to run. Like I say, ccleaner is well worth it and is free. After that try running defrag again. That may solve that problem of yours. If not, you can try a different defrag utility. There are some free ones on MG.

iv tried the disk cleanup utility, first it runs windows installer and asks for my microsft office publisher 2003 discs, i cancel it, and then it runs the disk cleanup utility. i check the options i wish to use, pretty much everything, and then start it. it gets to 4% and then freezes on "compress old files", even when that option is unchecked. i think ill try the other option you gave, thanks for your help

as far as posting my email online, its a free account, its very disposable.

I think you will find it hasn't frozen, it just takes ages to process Compressed Files if you don't run this frequently. You just need to be a little patient ;)

i though the same thing so i let it run overnight. it ran for a total of abut 12 hours, it was at 4% for about 11 hours and 55 minutes. im pretty sure it froze.

I agree with Walter and Lev,

I had the same problem and then I ran CCleaner and I had a fast defrag scan. Also Windows defrag is just to slow,I've been using AusLogics Disk Defrag that I downloaded from MajorGeeks and it very fast and it's a freebie.
