After using Defraggler (Piriform) I still have 46% defragged. This does not look good to me, but I don't know the basics of defragging. Could it be OK?

    Hi

What Windows version and Service Pack are you using?

How much space has your HDD left, can right click and choose Properties to tell this?
What is your File Format, FAT32 or NTFS?

By 46% defragged do you mean its actually defragmented 46% and 54% is still fragmented or is it still 46% fragmented files?

Run the likes of CCleaner first and do a Cleaner and then a Registry clean (run the registry one until nothing is left to remove) then re-try Defraggler.

But an alternative to try is JKDefrag (also free)

    I'm running Vista Business 32 bit SP2

142 of 230 is free on my hard drive

    I'm using NTFS

    4G RAM

    CPU E6550@2.33 GHz

    46% is defragged.

I've used CCleaner (including registry cleaner 2x)

I've used Registry Mechanic as well.

    Hi Mortonman.

Puran Defrag Free Edition is a very good defragmenter which has the ability to do
a 'Boot Time' defrag for even more efficiency.

I think it's best to stick with just CCleaner for registry cleanup.

If you're not letting CCleaner do this for you, check the Recycle Bin and clean it
    out if necessary.

You can also use Disk Cleanup :

    Hello Mortonman,

you could go with mjnc's post as I never tried that software but I use IOBit Smart Defrag which is a good program to use and it also runs in the background so you can work at the same time.

As per mjnc's post, go for Puran Defrag. It's VERY good imo and has some additional optional features such as boot defrag and filling gaps, optimization etc.

Remember that C:\System Volume Information files are System Restore Files and do not get defragged if they are fragmented.

Windows Vista System Restore has more extensive capabilities than in Windows XP and therefore uses more disk space,
but unlike Win XP, AFAIK, Vista does not have the capability to adjust the amount of disk space that System Restore uses.

With CCleaner's Tools you can selectively Delete old restore points in XP
but I'm not sure if that works in Vista.

The boot time defrag in Puran Defrag might be able to defrag those files.

    Another possibility is Contig

JKDefrag, linked to in Halo's post is also very good.
It is now known as My Defrag.
IMO, it's kind of a toss-up as to which is better; Puran or My Defrag.

Do you have any information on what is handled during the boot defrag (folders file, MFT, ...)?

Read the info supplied in the link below. The info given on there and recommended by MA a while back in a post, was enough for me to try and since that I never looked back at another defrag program: http://majorgeeks.com/Puran_Defrag_Free_Edition_d6360.html ;)

    Thanks! :cool

I also went to the Puran website where they mention "MFT, Registry, Pagefile, etc".

If you're interested in regular PageFile defragmenting WithOut having to go through the
entire 'Boot Time Defrag' in Puran, as mentioned in other threads, you can use PageDefrag.
It can be configure to run at each bootup and is very fast.

IMHO Using the default defragger that comes with Xp in my opinion it just moves everything closer together. I came across a program called "Ultimate Defrag" which lets you specify where you want files. I did purchase this and have found that the program will allow you to place the files you want on the outer platters for quick use.It comes with a hefty manual which I read and still read to ensure I don't goof something up. The program does do what is says and I see an improvement in my disk performance. It may not be free and not for every one but I use it and like it.
