Hi folks. Back with a problem. I am getting the delayed write failed message for my secondary drive which is partitioned into two sections, E and F. I can view the files that are on these partitions, but can't access them. I can't access the files and get a failure of I/O device. When I went to boot yesterday and today, I had to F1 to resume to finish the boot.
The comp is a couple of weeks from 5 years old. It consists of the following components. Asus P5K MB, Intel Core Duo E6750, 2 gig Geil ram, WD 500gig drive, secondary Seagate drive ( ST35xxxx may be 350 gig, although I thought it was 500?) BFG 8800GT video card (that I had to bake earlier this year) Samsung DVD burner, and ThermalTake 500W PSU. It is running Win XP Pro 32 bit. It is mostly a toy I use for general stuff and to play lineage II.
So, besides the obvious possibility that the cables have worked loose, how likely is it that the SATA controller would have failed and I could still see the drive and files, with either loose cables or failed controller? A quick scan of the drive found no errors. I haven't done a disk check with Seagate diagnostics, yet. Any thoughts or ideas would be most welcome. This seemed to show up yesterday when Facebook wouldn't work in Chrome, although it works today. Thanks.

I did a shutdown, moved the SATA cable to another slot and rebooted. According to SMART, the drive is defective, should be backed up and replaced. Of course, a backup with a non working drive is problematic. I guess I will be removing it and checking to see if it is still covered by warranty. It seems that Chrome is now messed up again and I am now on Firefox. Not what I had planned for today.

If it is the WD drive that is giving the trouble, go ahead and burn the WD DOS diagnostic to a CD and run the extended test. The DOS version will attempt to fix errors. Even if it corrects them you may want to replace the drive but it may be able to make backup more reliable. http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?groupid=606&sid=2&lang=en
