Is there any way to delete corrupted files without formatting? The file/folder is not in use, unlocker, pocket killbox and moveonboot don't work.

    Microsoft's article on this problem:

What is the name and PATH to the Folder / Files you are trying to delete.

If you know the olde method of deleting files using DOS, maybe we can help.

    What operating system?

I am using winXP. The file/folder is at c:\123\hpc. I tried doing "del 123" in DOS and recovery console but nothing happened.

Are you logged into an account with administrator priveleges? It may sound like a stupid question, but you need to be logged in as an administrator most likely to delete the file/folder in question.

Check the file/folder's properties (permissions, "read only", etc.) by right clicking the file/folder, selecting Properties. Ensure that your user account is listed with FULL permissions on the permissions tab (change it to be, if not), and ensure that "read only" isn't checked as well (uncheck it if it is).

Have you tried in safe mode?

Make sure you have a backup of your C:\123 directory before you start (if you can).

As suggested earlier, boot up into Safe mode by pressing F8 over and over again at startup.

When you finally get into Safe mode, type in C:\ <enter> at the DOS prompt.

This should get you back into the C:\ root directory. Then type in rd c:\123\hpc

This should remove the c:\123\hpc Folder (if it can). If not empty, type in cd 123 then type in del *.*<enter> This should delete all files there, unless there are further sub-Folders in C:\123\hpc , which knowing HP there could be. :cry

Once you get rid of c:\123\hpc (and all its contents), then type in cd\ and you will get back to your C:\ prompt. Then type in rd 123<enter> and hopefully all Folders and Files under (and) c:\123 should be gone. This is easier to do than explain.

There may be lots of Folders under ...\hpc. If so delete each Folder, one by one, until all Folders / Files are gone. The same thing may happen under C:\123 as well. Apply the same treatment there.

Sorry this appears messy, but DOS prefers empty Folders and Files to succeed. Hope this helps (and works).

The only time I encountered a folder that could not be deleted by unlocker was one that had foriegn characters in the file names (chinese I think) and all I had to do was to go thru and rename the files to things like X.txt and Y.exe or aaa.whatever and when there were no more Chinese characters the folder deleted right off with out any help at all. All it takes is one character in the folder to stop it from deleting.

Thanks for all the help. I tried deleting it under DOS in safe mode but again, nothing happened, some screenshots:

Unlocker doesn't work because the file is corrupted and unreadable

Same thing with DOS, the 'hpc' folder is hidden and I can't unhide it or change any of it's arrtibutes.

Is there some software that blanks only the sectors the folder is in? I did the same thing when doing a sector-by-sector clone of the HDD and I think that's when this problem started.

Yup, I've tried chkdsk, that was the first thing I tried, doesn't do anything to fix the problem.

I'm sure it's not a worm, unlocker.exe is the unlocker application from http://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker/

When trying to delete it from DOS, it will say cmd.exe, when scanning with spybot, it will say spybotSD.exe, the name depends on the application accessing the corrupted file.

Is there anything else I can do to fix this? There are many secure erase programs out there, but most of them completely wipe the drive, is there one that just wipes the sectors this folder is in?
