Delete Kazaa?

I know you are all fans of me wanting to delete Kazaa, because it is associated with spyware. Here is my issue: in Add/Remove programs, I have Kazaa Media Desktop 2.0.2 (10,932 MB) and Kazaa Media Desktop 2.6.3 (43 MB). If I delete one or both of these, is all of my music going to go as well?!? I ask, because I had Morpheus a few years ago and I decided one day to delete it, and all of my music was deleted along with it. I have a lot of music, so it would be devastating! Also, I still would like to sometimes use Kazaa Lite (I know, I know - that risks spyware issues as well), but does that run on its own without Kazaa? It seems like in the past when I have deleted Kazaa or files associated with it, it has caused my Kazaa Lite to not work. It's just such a pain to do all that re-downloading/changing my settings stuff. Any advice would be wonderful! Thank you, MajorGeek friends!

p.s. I also have a lot of Kazaa and Kazaa Lite files on my computer that may or may not be related to the files in Add/Remove Programs. I don't know how that works, but I have re-downloaded those programs several times, so maybe they are remnants of older downloads? I don't know, but what should I do with them?

if you copy your music files to another folder that is in the kazza folder you wont lose anything :D

If the music was in a folder that was in the Kazaa folder, wouldn't that mean that it WOULD be deleted along with the Kazaa folders? Shouldn't I create a folder outside of Kazaa to put my music? This is confusing for me.

AWESOME. That's kind of what I thought. So, is deleting Kazaa going to affect Kazaa Lite? Am I going to have to re-download Kazaa all over again to make K-Lite work? I really hope not. My hard drive needs space badly, and I already am going to delete some music to help free space.

no. They are two separate programs. Kazaa Lite is a hacked version of the original Kazaa. They both work separately.

You could also use a free alternative like WinMX for your music :)

Dump your Kazaa and go ahead with Kazaa lite, and you should be ok.
I've been using the lite version for a long time, without any spyware problems.

Just watch the installation, and do not ok the installation of anything that you do not have to have.

Yes both these p2p programs are known for having spyware bundled into them. Ive never tried Kazaa Lite personally so I dont know, but I would stay away from those and use freeware p2p like WinMX.

    original Kazaa = Spyware

    Kazaa Lite = clean

you definetely want to get that original kazaa off your system and do some serious spyware scans with programs like Adaware SE, Spybot Search and Destroy etc...

here's a remover for the spyware associated with the original Kazaa:

    http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=3110

if your Kazaa Lite does not work upon uninstalling Kazaa (it shouldn't be a problem), just uninstall Kazaa Lite and resinstall it, by clicking on the install file you originally used to install it... it's that simple...

and if you are going to be using these P2P programs you better make sure you aren't sharing any music files... the last thing you want is the RIAA breathing down your neck... Kazaa Lite has an option for IP blocking, and an option not to share any files...

Well put ANHEDONIC ;) just use that removal tool, and use that option for ip blocking and file sharing and you should be ok with the Lite version :)

It is illegal to download as well as upload copyrighted media, disabling file sharing provides no real legal protection.

while you are right, it seems that the RIAA is only targeting people who are sharing the copyrighted material that they downloaded... they are enabling the distribution of copyrighted material by allowing other users to download it off their computer... you've got to think, there's no way the RIAA hacked into their computers to find out how many files they downloaded (and subsequently stored in a safe location).... so the users that are being prosecuted must be sharing all the files they have on their system, which RIAA can easily access...

Kazaa Lite has an IP blocker feature and a feature that enables you to hide anything you are sharing.... i like to err on the safe side and Disable Fire Sharing completely....

Believe me, I have frequented the spyware forums on this site a few times, so I should be clean, as far as Kazaa stuff is concerned. I just wanted to be sure that I wouldn't lose all my stuff by getting rid of it. It especially worried me, since I had a Kazaa Media Dektop file that was 10,932 MB. I thought that might mean that it included all the music files in it. Thanks for all the advice! I think I will stick with K-Lite, since it works for me, but any additional advice would be great as well! I love MajorGeeks! :)

Abby... just create a Music folder somewhere on your hard-drive... then go into Kazaa Lite options and set it up so that all your files download to that folder, so u know where to find them, and that way if you ever uninstall Kazaa Lite and by accident forget to transfer your music files, you won't lose them... even so, sometimes when you uninstall applications, it leaves the original folder it created on your hard drive...

also, i would be sure to run that program i linked you to, to make sure you got all the spyware that came bundled with the original Kazaa... it really wouldn't hurt to run it...

and in Kazaa Lite options, there should be a place where you can select an option that will block bad file extensions, like anything that might end in .mp3.exe because those files most often than not contain viruses or trojans...

Question: Why is the Kazaa file so big if it doesn't contain my music files? It says it is 10,932 MB, which is why I am scared to delete it. It must contain something important if it's that big. I moved my files and stuff, I just don't get why the file is that big. I know, I am being obsessive. ;)

Open up the Kazaa folder and run a search for *.mp3, *.wma, or any other file format your music files are stored in. The * is a wildcard. Any music files that turn up, cut and paste them to wherever you wish to stick your music files

Ok, so I got rid of all the Kazaa associated stuff I could find, so that is taken care of as far as I can see. Now K-Lite isn't connecting like it used to. I don't know if that is related or not, but I am not sure if I should try also getting rid of that and then re-downloading it or what. What could be wrong? What should I do? I was a little afraid this might happen.

Ok, I fixed the problem, but after I did that, I accidentally deleted the registry keys for K-lite, so I am trying to redownload K-lite. I am stupid sometimes. I hope I don't end up with a billion copies of K-lite on my computer. The whole reason I was deleting Kazaa in the first place was to free space. Ugh!
