Deleted RPC Server Regisitry Entry

Windows XP Home Edition reports "RPC Server is Unavailable" and my printer no longer works. I have the drivers and disk but the install program won't run without the RPC server.

I may have deleted the registry entry for the RPC server with HiJackThis or another Spyware program.

Anyone know how to recover from this?

Do you currently have WindowsXP Service Pack 2 installed?


If so: Please look in Add or Remove programs for "Windows XP Service Pack 2" and uninstall it. After uninstall is complete, reboot and reinstall Windows XP Service Pack 2.

If not: Install Windows XP Service Pack 2 and reboot.

One of the two steps listed above should take care of your problem.

I actually was able to solve the "RPC is Unavailable" problem by going into "Control Panel" "Adminstrative Tools" "Component Services" "Services" and then activating the RPC Service and the RPC Locator Service. I also found an inactivated (by HiJack This) printer driver which I also reactivated.

After that I was able to use XP to "Re-install" the printer and voila, it all works again.

For once things went my way!!!
