In addition to the first error, I received:

unregmp2.exe - Entry Point Not Found
The procedure entry point GetIUMS could not be located in the dynamic link library MSDART.DLL

And, that was as far as it would let me go. Even when I clicked "OK", I would just receive another error box with a repeat of it.

Never give up! Always fight! Hurah!

Anyway, during the repair installation, a little known cool tidbit of info to use on hangs like this.

First question. IF you had windows media player 10 installed on your computer, and you are doing a repair installation, a known issues (somtimes) comes up.

Anyway, if you are within your installation, press SHIFT + F10 key, a command prompt will show up.

    Type in:

    taskmgr (press enter)

your task manager will show up.

Look for unregmp2.exe within the processes. Click the button "End Proccess".

    Windows should continue as normal.

Here the link to the Knoppix 3.9 'Live CD' the file is almost 700Mb in size; so, it will take some time to download. Then you can create the CD from the ISO. Version 4.0.1 is out but I can't find the non-DVD version on any of the servers.

No problem! I've been VERY BUSY, lately. I would have popped up sooner, otherwise.

    Wow! Very cool! It worked.

That is really odd that Windows Media Player 10 was part of the problem. I believe that it was Windows Media 10 that started all my problems in the first place with this computer! It was right after I installed it that I began having massive issues with the rest of the computer. Dang, I've been through so many fixes with this computer since May, that it has escaped me as to what specifically happened with it!

    Thank you!

So...now on to re-re-activate windows and install all the updates.

I haven't downloaded the Knoppix yet, but I'll burn that to CD on this computer (not laptop) while the updates are loading.

    Be back, and thanks again!

    Glad it helped!

Shift + F10 to get the command prompt has been my friend on many occasions!

    Ha Ha Ha.....

OK, here's what is going on now. I'm on the laptop, and when microsoft update ran, it found 17 items to install.

The items were all downloaded, but failed during the install at the following, without a message to alert me of the failure:

Update 10, Installing 823559: Security Update for Microsoft Windows

It was successful on Update 11, Installing Security Update for Windows XP (329834)

Now I've received a Copy Error box,

Update 12, Security Update for Windows XP (KB828741), which says:

Setup cannont copy the file es.dll
Ensure that the location specified below is correct, or change it and insert '(unknown)' in the drive you specify.

    Copy files from:

(drop down box) and browse as options....

    c:\c2c55459c9fb2e8a135915\sp1

Then, after I clicked, RETRY... I got:

    Copy Error
Do you want to to continue Setup without copying this file?

    QUICK question!!

The original update session left off a bunch of the updates, not surprised, but did require a restart for the others to take effect.

When I restarted, I happened to look in the lower right corner, and didn't see my Trend Micro (PC-Cillin) running. When I attempted to open it, it reminded me that I did NOT renew my membership this year! I knew that it was expiring on the 14th of this month, but had planned on downloading one of the free ones recommended....BUT, this was back when I thought I'd have all the computer issues fixed by the 14th.

    UGH!!!

I see that it is running on this computer (PC..aka former deleted system32 etc comp.), but I'm guessing that the shutdown cued it in on the laptop that I hadn't renewed.

    SO...

I haven't yet researched the several (many) that have been recommended in MANY other threads, eg, how to protect yourself against malware, etc. So, that being said, can you (one of you, both of you, someone else), recommend your favorite for downloading? I had also planned obtaining one of the free firewalls too, so your recommendation on that would be great too!

After I download the anti-virus and firewall, I'll finish your recommendations in your previous post. Well.....I'm sure I'll be infected w/ 239489203 viruses and spyware, so I'll continue on after I check for the damage on that front as well.

Thanks, and sorry for the brain freeze.

    Well, almost headed there....

I have this new User named OWNER (lol) since I did the repair. This is in addition to my User account. Should I delete the Owner, or delete mine and re-name Owner? I bring this up because I didn't know which user to log into to obtain the AVS and Firewall since they both have administrator rights.

    Thanks!

The Owner account is a default account with XP home. You can delete the account using User Accounts from the Control Panel.

    OK, where were we?

I now have AVAST and Sygate on both computers. I'm not positive that everything loaded on the laptop for AVAST, but we will see.

Back to the laptop.... I think we left off at the point where not all of the updates would download. Yes, I realize there were things before that, but before I could do those, I had to get the updates.

    What should I do now?

Noooo, I was very wrong about the laptop just now. I received the little icon saying again that I have updates for windows. I clicked on it, and again, not all of them were able to download. But, for those to take effect that did download, I would need to restart.

When I restarted, I received an error message that Avast could not get any updates, not because there weren't any btw. Also, I realized that late last night, I must NOT have installed the firewall on the laptop, because at that point, I wasn't able to access the internet, due to the new Avast blocking everything on both computers.

    Summary:

Laptop - Uncompleted windows updates; non-updated, possibly not completed Avast; no firewall; when I just tried to start Internet Explorer, I received a "Internet explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close...etc"; other problems which we were originally trying to fix, but have been put on hold due to all this stuff

PC1 - Avast and Sygate both loaded, but still unrelated problems that were put on hold due to all this stuff

PC2 - We haven't even TOUCHED this one.

    :D  :D

Cindy, there are so many things that can go wrong with Windows update. Have your tired to download the individual updaes to your latops desktop and install then from there; note the KB or Q article hotfix numbers search them on Microsoft then download and install the update. Try that for one of the updates that failed to install.

    Have you installed SP2?

If not, here is a link for the Full Version.

Windows XP Service Pack 2 Network Installation

Even though it says Network Installation, it is the full SP2. Beware this is a 272Mb download.

This may fix some of the issues you are experiencing.

    Heya!

Well, for whatever reason, I don't have any access to the internet from the laptop now, so I can't do the remaining 2 updates, nor the SP2.

I tried todisable Avast and then uninstall Avast on the laptop, without any luck.

In fact pretty much nothing is working on the laptop. (not an understatement) Everything comes up with the "We've encountered an error, etc etc)

I tried to disable both Avast and the Sygate from the PC, as it is the gateway to the DSL, and I thought it might be blocking the laptop.

As a side note.....and I'm not sure if it is worth mentioning.....but I do use Vonage, which uses a Lynksys Broadband router, a Belkin Wireless G router and then my modem through the local internet provider for ADSL. I sort of toyed with the idea that maybe the Lynksys or the Belkin had some type of firewall on it too when we were initially talking about my Java issue. Now with all of these other access blocks, I thought I would go ahead and mention it.

So, may I send some italian pasta or fine leather as a thank you for all of your help? (lol, but no lol)

Have you tried connecting your laptop straight to the ADSL Modem, to see if that works.

    Do you get an IP?

Click Start, Run, type in: cmd (press enter)

ipconfig /release (releases your current ip address)

ipconfig /renew (attempts to obtain a new ip address)

    What are your results?

Can you also ping the following?

ping 127.0.0.1 (this checks to see if you nic is working properly)

It would seem that the response I get when I try and even get to RUN is: Windows Explorer has encountered a problem....etc.

    :(

Thank you for your help too! :)

Can you reboot into safemode with networking?

    Then try my steps above?

  25. aviano_2004

    aviano_2004 Private E-2

Sorry, I should have stated that I tried that as well. The response was for the computer to keep the hourglass on, as if working, then eventually to go back to the prompt of "Windows is running in safe mode....etc" This is without me doing anything.
I tried the shift f10 too....with the same response.
