I purchased this at a local auction house for cheap, hoping to get it up and running.
It must be shelf pull because it still had the Wal-mart sticker on it.:-D

Anyway it has no power, no lights,DOA. :cry

I have reseated every thing Ram, HDD, pulled the Cmos battery.

Even puled the battery and hold down the power button.

Today I took out the power jack and tested it. Its reading 19.6v.

It will not boot in to Bios.

    What else to check?

    Bad MOBO?
    i5
    4 GB ram
    500 GB HDD

    Hi James

When you bought it did it have damage or look as if someone had opened the case up?

Does the charger cable adapter have a light on it and does it light up, doesn't need to be in the laptop just plugged in.

plodr: I'm not sure how to do that but I'm willing to give it a try. Can I get a link? I have some basic testing tools.

DavidPg: Yes the adapter has a light on that works. I have another dell charger with the same voltage that powers on, and charges an older XPS. But it still would not power on.

The CMOS battery was missing. I replaced it but would not power on.

When I took it apart every thing looked factory.

Dell lists the tech specs on this page (go to the tech specs tab). Nice little laptop BTW. But, you could put in the Service Tag number on the Dell Support site and get the exact specs for your machine.

I can't help as far as laptops. I've taken one keyboard off only because I needed to do that to install more RAM. (stupid design)
The only thing I've done with laptops is add RAM, never anything more technical. I'm afraid I'll break them if I attempt any sort of dismantling.

I have taken a few Hp DV 7's and DV 9's apart just to for grins and giggles.
    They had bad GPU's.
I'm the family and friends IT guy.;)
One of the local shop's has a Jack I can try just to be sure, so I'll try that before I go any further.

thanks ndonah that was on my list too.

BTW Paid less than $50.00 for it.

Update:I got a new jack for the local PC store, The guy let me take it for free, got home and still no power. So I box up the parts and off I go back the the store, while I'm there the owner checks a few things on the MOBO and It's bad no power.

He doesn't charge me any thing and Is going to help me try and locate a new board. I have done business with him in the past. A few parts here, an Optical drive there. So it's good to deal with the local guys for service like that.

Mom and Pop shops are generally head and shoulders above the chains.
