I have a Dell Inspiration 1150 that is getting hot, will speedfan or any other software work on this problem? And how do I get in and check the temp? It is running XP Home SP2. I checked the bios but I didn't see anything about the fan.

    Hi

Yes you could use Speedfan or even Everest to check temps.

IIRC the 1150 is a laptop so do double check that the air vents are fluff free, however the temp monitors will just give you an adea of temps they will not reduce the temps, for that yoou will need to clean the air vents and as much of the cooling areas of the laptop as possible. Make sure that the surface the laptop is on is flat and not a bed or material that would possibly block the vents.

After posting this I checked the task manager because it was also running very slow and found that the CPU was almost constatnly at 100%. Even if it was just sitting there with no apps open. Is that because of the heat problem or vice versa. It seems like the who came first the chicken or the egg thing. Does anyone have any ideas about what the problem is? I hope it doesn't need a new CPU. :cry

    Hi

Now you have hit on what could be causing this issue as if Task Manager is running any application at 100% you have a problem, what application exe is running at 100% in Task Manager?

Initial thoughts are possibly malware, but would need to know the exact application file/exe that is running at 100%, could laso be a corrupt or incompatible app.

Halo, yesterday when I was watching it, it was explorer.exe that was using most of it. Should I uninstall/reinstall IE7? Or remove it and go to Firefox?

    Hi

No as explorer.exe is the windows shell explorer and not Internet Explorer as that would be iexplore.exe.

Could be that the inbuilt zip util is corrupt so just to rule this out run this from a Command Prompt window, aka CMD.

    regsvr32 C:\windows\system32\zipfldr.dll /u

or some likely suspect is malware, so do run the Read and Run Me guide and start a new thread in malware with the logs to rule this out.

Halo, You are a genious!! It was malware, I followed the steps in the malware removal guide and it found 4 issues as well as 5-6 viruses and now the system idle process is running right around 96%. Thank you very much!! I also installed speedfan and the HD is running around 51C and the Temp1 is at 71C.

I spoke too soon. Now my CPU is pegged out and the culprit is pctsSvc.exe Any idea what that is, but as I finish typing this it is running back at 96% idle.

    Hi

pctsSvc.exe is part of Spyware Doctor, but as malware can do its best to hide itself it can take the name of legit application to hide, so I would be tempted to run the malware guide and start a new thread in the malware forum and attach the logs for the malware experts here to review.

or you could before posting in the malware forum, disable PC Tools Spyware Doctor and see if your CPU spikes.

Also what security applications do you have installed? if you have too many that do the same job then they can and do conflict leading to issues like yours, as two like applications can be scanning the same files and if one doesnt like the other CPU% goes up as they are both battling to scan same files.
