    Dell Inspiron 580
    Win 7 64 ultimate

After install 'completes' startup and repair just hang and hang.

Since I formatted this computer (to be rid of all the Dell garbage, and a clean install), I have not been able to boot the computer all the way to windows once.

Anyone got any suggestions? I wish I could get a system snapshot, but can't even get it started.

I have access to bios, but nothin I do there is any good.

I was able to get win xp 64 bit installed on it before I realised there were no Dell drivers for the on board hardware that were xp compatible. Although I was able to get windows xp 64 bit to start up. I couldn't do much else. No sound, no networking.

    Any suggs, any at all?

Go to the Dell Support site and enter the Service Tag number that's located on a sticker on the side, back or bottom of the computer. Once that's done you should be able to download all device drivers for the computer as well as manuals including a service manual. Note that any letters in the Service Tag must be capitalized.

That was the first thing I tried. Most of the drivers there are beyond useless for this install for whatever reason.

Also useless for the xp install, as the majority of those drivers are for most OS, BUT xp.

I have downloaded all the drivers I can find for the on board devices using the ven/dev info. Still no luck. Again most of these are only usable with win 7.

I did talk to a guy with DELL support, and we ran the bios diag, everything is good on the hardware side. I was told the hardware WOULD support win xp 64 bit, and that the drivers were there 'somewhere' on the site.

Be dipped in hot oil if I can find them.

I believe I found the page for Windows XP drivers for your Inspiron 580.

It puzzles me though, that Windows 7 Ultimate didn't automatically install device drivers during the setup process. I'm running Vista Ultimate on a 32-bit Dell mobile workstation and all device drivers, save 2, were installed during setup. The XP drivers for those 2 devices work under Vista. When i connected my printers, Windows Update automatically installed the HP driver and located and installed the Lexmark driver and software.
