Hi. I haven't been on for a while, everything's been running nicely, but now I have a major problem with my girlfriends laptop.

It's a Dell Inspiron6400 running XP, fully updated SP3 etc.

Recently it went "BSOD" on her, and when attempting to restart came up with the following errors:-

I ran the onboard diagnostics, and I understand that this is due to a corrupt disk segment, which just happens to be where one of the system files resides. Am I correct in this assumpation?

I have tried "restore to last known good config" and it still doesn't work. I know that there are good restore points there as I recently gave it a good clean up with CC and checked all of those things.

I've got it running with a CD copy of Knoppix, and have backed the entire HDD up onto an external drive so am not too worried about losing data, though there ARE some licenced progs on there that would be hard to get back again if I have to rebuild, so I was wondering how I went about telling the FAT that the files have moved, and replacing the corrupt version with a known good version from an old restore point.

Any guidance on this would be brilliant guys!

    Cheers

You can try running hiren on it or windows pe and go to a command promp, run chkdsk on the disk.

    Hi sosa.

I've run the onboard diagnostics, but that doesn't help with actually fixing the problem. Any ideas anyone?

Sounds like your hard drive is failing. Not sure if you can "fix" this without installing a new hard drive.

Did you run any drive test utilities from the disc manufacturer?

Download the Hiren iso and burn it into a disc, and run HDD Regenerator. You can find it in the 9+ version of Hiren not the lastest one which is 13.0, let me know if you need a link to it.

Sosa, if you could let me have a download link that would be great.

I ran the built in tests, and the error only seems to involve two blocks on the disk. I'm hoping that it has taken a knock and sustained physical damage, rather than it being in the process of failing. If it fails then I will replace it, but I'd rather get this one back up and running if possible.

    Hello,

I seem to have a similar problem with my Dell XPS. When I turn on the computer I instantly get a message stating that the computer was not booted properly and it asks me to either start the program normally or allow the computer to fix it, I have had it start either way, but my screen is always black and never gets to the screen for me to log in. I have also tried opening it on safe mode, as well as having it start at an older date (by pressing F8), but to no avail, the computer just seems to go to a black screen. I ran a test diagnostic on it and got an error 0142, unit 1: Drive self test failed status byte:79. My question is do you think downloading the Hiren iso running the HDD Regenerator will work? If so I went to the link that was provided (http://www.hiren.info/pages/bootcd) but I was not sure how to download the Hiren iso, can you please tell me exactly what I need download i.e. after the link which items I need to click on, any help would be grateful!!!!

Sounds to me the HDD is in error, meaning the sector or part of the HDD has failed causing files to be corrupt. Regenerator would work to rebuild data on the disc assuming the disc new to move the files to areas 'ok' to save the data. Hiren would also have tools to test the HDD to see if the drive is bad. I would recommend, if possible, gaining the suite of tools for anyone to use :) it's a nice tool set.

Thanks for the reply, but what I don't understand is how to download this from the website, nothing is click-able, and when I search in Downloads there are so many of them that I get confused, sorry but I am not very tech savvy, so if you can give me instructions on how to get this done it would be very appreciative. Apologies for the ignorance.

    Hi hussa,

Please give the exact model of XPS you are running. If it is a desktop it should be on the circle surrounding the power button; on a laptop it would be on a white tag on the bottom. Also which operating system are you running?

Hiren's did not have the rights to use that program. It has been removed from current versions. Only older versions from 9.0 or below have that program.

I think the best thing to do would be to figure out the brand of Hard Drive you have and see if there is a manufacturer's diagnostic that would help fix it. On a laptop this is unlikely but we could look around for something.

    Sach2,

The problem is with the laptop. The operating system is windows vista and its an XPS M1330.

Can I use an older version of Hiren? If so, where can I find it. I really need to at least get some of my documents off of this computer, most of them I have backed up, so I am glad, but there are a few that I need to get off from the computer.

Thanks for all your help I really appreciate it.
