    me, again.

I swapped out printers with a co-worker when her DELL LP 1700n stopped printing. I rarely print, but wanted to troubleshoot her problem, so I hooked it up to my pc.

She's used this printer for about a year, with no problem.

When I hooked it up, my computer recognizes new hardware, but the New Device Wizard does not. Odd, that. It hangs at the search page looking for a
    "Dell Dell Laser Printer 1700n"

I've never seen a printer listed as a "Dell Dell".

    The search fails.

I went online and got the driver and tried again. Same result. No driver.

Has anyone had problems with the Dell 1700n or the driver?

Oh yeah. I have the CD but it's in another office across town. I was hoping not to have to go search for it.

    thanks, kids.

ps - also, every now and then it makes a funny "surge" type noise that lasts about a second. I have an hp that does the same thing.

Did you get the driver from DELL?

Any errors listed in Device Manager in relation to a HW device being seen but no driver installing due to an error code of somesort? ( if so whats the error code )

I have not been through the manual but some ideas spring to mind...

If it has a reset button can you reset the printer?
Will it print as in a test print ( some printers allow a few keys on the actual printer to be pressed )?

This seems to have progressed to somthing more than a driver issue, I think.

The "LOAD/REMOVE PAPER" light stays on and the rollers run non stop. There is no paper jam and there is enough paper in the tray.

    Thanks, again.

Have you solved this yet bbsan or given up hope?

I had one further thought as I was looking at my laser in work which is not far off the Dell 1700n as its a HP1320n which loosely resembles the Dell ( no doubt HP build that model for Dell anyhow ) and back on topic.... check the rubber rollers that pickup and feed the paper through the printer for wear as if they are worn, paper will be seen but the rollers will not be able to catch hold of the paper to feed it through, thus running constantly?

i fixed the paper jam issue: take off the two rubber rollers that are like black rubber bands the size of the quarter. turn them inside out and put back on. no more paper jam.

    good luck, bpd
