Dell Laserjet 1700 additional paper tray

Does anyone know how to configure a Dell Laserjet 1700 to accept the additional 500 page paper tray? We have a 1700n with the additional tray and a 1700 without. The 1700n bit the dust, but we want to add the tray to the 1700. It is easy to physically connect it to the printer, but the additional tray doesn't show up. I can't find a manual anywhere. Can anyone help?
