Moved from software forum. I have had a dell latitude d600 for a while and it has been operating flawlessly. Have not downloaded anything for quite a while or changed anything but when I go to start it, it will not turn on. No lights no fan, nothing. I have determined that the battery and ac cable adapter are not at fault by putting it in a friends d600. I also tried his battery and cable in mine and nothing. I removed and reinstalled the ram modules and the hard drive and tried various slots with the ram to no avail. I tried the trick I read in another forum about pressing on the dock port while pressing the on key, no dice. Any ideas anyone? When I was in the software forum someone thought it may be the reserve battery but doesn't that just control the clock and bios settings? Any help would be welcome.

Link to Dell Support troubleshooting wizard. Choose your model and submit.
This may point you in the right direction. (Perhaps broken power switch?)
Someone else may have other suggestions.

In light of you now moving to the Hardware Forum I am closing your thread in the Software Forum http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?p=1245662#post1245662

It is best to keep to one thread per issue so that everyone can follow what advice you have already been given, or also anyone else who is trying to follow the thread who has the same issue.

If you need a thread moving to a different forum in future you can contact one of the Forum Administrators and ask that it be moved :)

Anyone found the solution to this problem yet? I'm having the same problem with a D600. It won't turn on but battery and power cord are both good. I can get the laptop to turn on by removing the battery and power cord for 20-30 seconds. When the laptop boots it's asking for the BIOS settings yadda... yadda... yadda... When laptop is on, I can only turn it of by going to Start... Turn off computer even though my settings are set so that when I push power button it should shut down. So here's what I think:

    1. Power Board is shot and get one on ebay to fix it.
    2. CMOS battery is dead and somehow controls the power button. Unlikely since CMOS battery only supposed to keep BIOS settings. But I'm not the engineer who designed this D600 so it might very well control the power board.

I'll try replacing the CMOS battery first and will keep posting on my progress. Oh yeah, you can just buy regular watch batteries and recycle your wiring from your old Dell cmos battery you just need electrical or duct tape to string the batteries and wires together.

I'll share a secret that I learned not long ago to see if it really is the power button. I assume that this is an ATX motherboard. If so, unplug the computer, open the side panel and loosen the main cable going from the power supply to the motherboard. It's called "P1". Then bend a paperclip, or other small wire, and cross the green wire to any of the black wires. When that is done, just lay the P1 cable down, and plug in the power cord. If the power button is the problem, the computer should turn on. it may not come up all the way, but you'll be able to tell that it is on, and after that, you'll know that it is your power switch causing the problem. Finding another power button to replace the bad one with is where I run into the problem. Good luck!

Unplug the laptop, pull the battery and hold the power button for a few seconds, put the battery back in & hit the power button. If this doesn't get it sounds like bad news. With all the bad weather, have you been using a UPS?

In case anyone is still having issues with their D600, these laptops have a notorious fault with the power switch. Sat beneath the switch is a black plug and the pressure of being pressed causes the solder joints at the bottom of the plug to come away from the motherboard. The way to tell is to press the power button and look closely at the power light, the give away is that it will flicker for a few seconds. I have repaired about 5 d600's with this fault by re-soldering the switch plug, although you have to work under a magnifying glass the connections are so small.
