Replaced harddrive with an identical Seagate 500GB drive. Backed up files in April to a WD My Passport. Now the laptop will not load the backup files from passport to the new drive. Not much hair left to tear out. Help.

What make and model of computer do you have and what version of Windows are you running including service pack?

If you're running Windows 7, did you take ownership of the WD My Passport drive?

It was also help if we knew what program/method you used to backup the files. It could have been Win 7's backup program, the program on My Passport or another installed program you used.

    I'm assuming you're using WinVista/7/8...

    1) Plug in usb port to both WD passport and computer
    a) make sure passport has power plug if it needs it

    2) boot windows and open my computer (press Windows key + E)

    3) you should see it as an external drive under "devices with removable storage" typically it will be drive E:

    4) if step 3 failed then post back

It is a Dell laptop Inspiron M5110. Windows 7. Don't know about ownership of Passport. I have gone through the entire download process several times to the point where the last click should download the files and the pop up says unable to complete. The files are on the Passport Just can't get ithem to the new hard drive. Also using an Acronis recovery disk.

In the security properties you should see your Windows login name. If not, then that could be your issue.

    Greetings, Chucker41.

    You mentioned this:

To take ownership of the Passport follow these steps:

    1. Open Windows Explorer, and then locate the file or folder (or in this case the drive) you want to take ownership of.

    2. Right-click the drive, click Properties, and then click the Security tab.

    3. Click Advanced, and then click the Owner tab.

    4. Click Edit, and then do one of the following:

    * To change the owner to a user or group that is not listed, click Other users and groups and, in Enter the object name to select (examples), type the name of the user or group, and then click OK.

    * To change the owner to a user or group that is listed, in the Change owner to box, click the new owner.

    5. (Optional) To change the owner of all subcontainers and objects within the tree, select the Replace owner on subcontainers and objects check box.

Complete details may be found here.

You might also provide the information requested earlier about what program(s) you used to perform the backup - was it Acronis, Windows Backup, or some other program?

In post #5 Acronis is specifically mentioned.

In this thread, the first answer has a link to download a .PDF file on how to Take Ownership and Give Permissions for an entire hard drive — it's a two-step process.
