dell monitor won't shut down just cycles colors

Hi all and thanks in advance. I tried searching and reading through the posts but couldn't find anything like this.

My Dad's Dell LCD monitor keeps cycling solid full screen colors -red, green, blue, black then over again upon shutting down the system. Monitor won't power off by the power button on the front either. He had just been unplugging it. He has no problems while running, everything looks/behaves normally. It only happens when he shuts it down.

 

What happens if you unplug the cable between the computer and the screen when the computer is running?

And when the computer is off?

The monitor continues to cycle through the colors when disconnected from the cpu. It only starts the cycle upon shut down so I could not check it while running. The computer shuts down, monitor goes black like it is turning off, then the colors start.

It seems like it is some type of diagnostics or something. Dad let it cycle through for over an hour but it never stopped.

Any ideas?

Do you have access to another computer to test the monitor on?

 

yes..I will do that just as soon as possible and post the result.

 

We got it straightened out. I went to Menu on the monitor and restored all settings and now it works properly again. If it starts up again, I'll dig deeper but for now I think we are all good.

I had the same problem and restoring the settings also resolved it for me.
