Yesterday I was hit with something that installed all kinds of popups and other related spyware on my machine, including bargain buddy among others. I got rid of most of it, but now cannot get rid of popups every minute or two from Inqwire, searchmiracle and others. I've run my own Symantec virus scan, spybot several times and adaware as well as the Microsoft Anti-Spyware but just cannot get rid of these last few. I've got hijack this on my machine and have looked through other threads and compared to what I've got but it's not quite the same. I think there may still be traces of Elite bar which I cannot get rid of as well, which may be involved. Help! Thanks. This is a great resource.

    Please follow the steps below:

    - Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ ME FIRST BEFORE ASKING FOR SUPPORT: Basic Spyware, Trojan And Virus Removal Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.

    - Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.

After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem:

    - Download HijackThis 1.99.1

    - Unzip the hijackthis.exe file to a folder you create named C:\Program Files\HJT

    - Do NOT run Hijack This from the Desktop, a temp folder, or a sub-folder of C:\Documents and Settings, or choose to run it directly from the downloaded ZIP file.

    - Before running HijackThis: You must close each of the following:your web browser, e-mail client, instant messenger, and programs like notepad, wordpad, MS Word etc. And any other unnecessary running programs.

    - Run HijackThis and save your log file.

    - Post your log as an ATTACHMENT to your next message. (Do NOT copy/paste the log into your post).

I ran hijack this from a folder I created in program files as you suggested, and downloaded the other programs as well. I have run and updated spybot and adaware several times over the last few days. I ran our company's Symantec Virusscan and it came up clean. I ran housecall and it found two, that seemed to be unrelated to my current problem. Let me know the next step. Thanks again for your help.

Is the below ProxyServer address something you setup? It seems to be something for the University of California Santa Barbara

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = 128.111.52.62:3127

Do you know what this ESPN360 is? Is it really for ESPN?
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ESPN360] C:\Program Files\ESPN360\bin\espn360.exe -nogui

If you are using WinXP or WinMe, make sure you have system restore disabled (per the tutorial).
For all OS types, make sure viewing of hidden files is enabled (per the tutorial).

Please run HijackThis and click on the "Open the Misc Tools Section" button on the open page. Then select "Open process manager" on the left-hand side. Look for the following process (or processes) and one at a time kill them by selecting it and then click "Kill process". Then click yes.
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\nvfphx\ipqyqio.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\uhnd\pusvql.exe

After killing all the above processes, click "Back".

Then please click "Scan" and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,SearchAssistant = about:blank
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [PSoft1] C:\WINDOWS\System32\psoft1.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ipqyqio] C:\WINDOWS\System32\nvfphx\ipqyqio.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [pusvql] C:\WINDOWS\System32\uhnd\pusvql.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [checkrun] C:\windows\system32\eliteecb32.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [vrcs] C:\WINDOWS\System32\gxdvuryf\vrcs.exe

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Boot into safe mode and use Windows Explorer to delete:
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\nvfphx <-- the whole folder
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\uhnd <-- the whole folder
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\gxdvuryf <-- the whole folder
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\psoft1.exe
C:\windows\system32\eliteecb32.exe <--- also delete any other files that begin with elite and end with .exe. There could be a bunch of them.

If you get an error when deleting a file. Right click on the file and check to see if the read only attribute is checked. If it is, uncheck it and try again. Other wise open Task Manager and kill the process if running then delete the file.

Now run Ccleaner (installed while running the READ ME FIRST). Now if running Win XP goto c:\windows\Prefetch and delete all files in this folder.
Now reboot in normal mode and post a new HJT log. And tell us how things are working.

Yeah I was messing around with proxies a while ago...guess I should delete it. I do believe that ESPN thing is legit. I have been looking for traces of elit???32.exe in the registry for the last half hour and found quite a few...deleted them and now I haven't had a popup in 10 minutes, knock on wood. I'll do the rest of what you're saying and hope that that is it. Thanks for all your help, I will keep you posted.

Thanks for your help. Everything seems to be fine today. Not one popup. There were two instances of elite???32.exe, deleted them and all is well. :)
