Our game download site is open now. It is at 85% completion with a few other things left to do, but everything is functional and plenty of freeware and shareware downloads online. Like MajorGeeks, we try and test everything to be sure it is virus and spyware free.

    Hope you like it!

Sure, forums are not open there, but will be soon where you can let us know about this stuff. I am checking into both now.

Oddly, it looks like it is tagging the readme.txt as a virus. Probably a false positive. I opened the forums at DemoNews for anyone interested. Like everything else there, functional, but still needs a bit of work. Stop by and say hi!

I use McAfee SiteAdvisor and noticed that it flags www.demonews.com "red", meaning "use with caution."

It is mentioned that: "Like MajorGeeks, we try and test everything to be sure it is virus and spyware free." But now, the question is - is the website safe?

    Hi

I take it you read the comments on Site Advisor, especially the top post from the owner of Demonews, which mentions that the 1 file in thousands that had that read flag was quickly removed.. sadly Site Advisor is slow slow slow in updating their database as usual.

I personally find their info on Site Advisor patchy at best and at worse OUT OF DATE, sad as it could have been a great idea. EDIT: I just checked the last date they checked the site and that download

out of date and poor poor poor for a site that many rely on.... just think if they say a site is OK and you go their and download something and its not OK, due to out of date info?

However I can say that all the downloads on Demonews are tested beforehand, exactly like they are on Majorgeeks for malware, but as we are all human the odd one may get through.. but that is rare and is quickly spotted and removed.

I spoke with Mcafee. Download.com has thousands of files that are malware as do other so called large file sites, but because they have tens of thousands of files, their ratios are low, and green. Demonews has only a few thousand files and 1 bad download (which was removed months ago) but it gives us a bad ratio. Mcafee claims they are aware of this bug and it would be addressed, a new toolbar version was released today.

Sadly, malware has become so bad (and I dont mean this personally, so do not take it that way) that many just dont get it. They trust unreliable third party tools, where common sense should prevail. Why, for example, would the founders of Majorgeeks risk their rep over a tiny game site? Sadly, the big game websites like download.com and softpedia are infecting people by the thousands while promising you they are not and being backed by unreliable tools like SiteAdvisor.

Avast sucks. Im sick of hearing "Avast says it has a virus". Every email we get is because of avast. Get rid of that false positive garabage and get a better av.

What I think is you get what you pay for, so basically don't get free programs in that category like F-Secure.
