Can anyone tell me what the recommended maximum capacity or size of the Windows Desktop folder should be, please?

    Hi

If you could just clarify this Desktop Folder in that is it the C:\users\youruser name folder as in the files saved to the main Desktop or is it the main C:\windows folder? think I know which one you mean but I have come across them being called vice versa names.

What Windows version are you using and what file format as this has a bearing?

But rule of thumb if you are on a corporate network and using a remote server drive for your personal account files is not to save to the desktop as some networks can do cleanup or untilise in the event of a issue, the likes fo Previous Versions in XP/Vista which will recover the last known good folders so you may loose data so always best to save into a personal drive on the network

However if a home PC then the more files you have on the desktop the more likely the desktop and icons show up slower, so best to save into folders on the HDD opposed to the desktop.

But if using FAT32 then max file size is 4GB in a single file and a folder max of 65,534 files of various sizes but less than a total of 4GB

If NTFS then max single file size is 256TB (terabytes) and 4,294,967,295 files in a single folder upto the max size of 256TB

But having folders with this many files can cause the icon index for those folders to work slower in building the icon index. Hope this goes part way to answering your question.
