Desktop Crashes/Errors?

Hello, new to the forums and I need some help with a display problem I've began to encounter just a few days after starting up my new HP Pavilion Entertainment PC.

It doesn't happen immediately, but at least once in my account sessions the desktop will start to go crazy when I attempt to click on anything. The first thing that always happens is my toolbar near the bottom of my screen will appear at the top of the screen with no response if I try to adjust it. Numerous other errors surface like the following

O - Any window I open becomes whited out or all grey. The frames or text in the menus disappear or become fragmented.

O - At least once my desktop icons and their names became jumbled. Ex. Firefox had the IE Icon and Windows Media Player had the My Computer Icon.

O - Attempting to refresh my desktop only makes things worse and when I try to click "Start" to restart my computer, the listing never shows or pops up in pieces near the top corner of the screen.

O - My desktop wallpaper turns black or dissapears altogether.

I'm truly at a loss as to how to fix this. I don't know if its a virus or not but I could find no mention of this sort of problem as a technical one online and seeing as this is a brand new PC, I thought it was probably malware related.
