I have this same problem on one of 6 computers we have for home and office. All are using Win XP prof. 2002 with service pack 3. One of these computers was using one of the stock images on the desktop (Desert picture) and the icons were all OK with white type under them. However, recently, if I put an image on the desktop, the part underneath the icons shows while letters on a dark blue background box. Very ugly. The only way to get back to showing the white letters against the blue background is to eliminate the image. If you put an image on the desktop, it will show the ugly blue boxes I mentioned above. I tried everything and checked the settings on the other computers, and they are same as on the offending machine, but nothing I do will get me back to my previous situation, that is, clear white letters superimjposed over the selected image on the desktop. If you can help, let me know. It is really a mystery.

Why not just live without the background image?

You can make the desktop bckgrnd any color you want.

It is certainly easier to read with a solid dark color behind the white text.

I AM living without a background picture. But I want to have one. It helps me to locate the skillions of icons I have on the desktop.

    Thanks anyhow.

Open System Properties in Control Panel, choose the Advanced tab, and click Settings in the Performance section. Turn on the Use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop option, and click OK.

Thank you nu_bee. I tried that and a lot of other things in the system folder under performance, but nothing I did caused it to change the same blue boxes around the titles of the icons. I can't figure out what else to do. Any ideas?

Further to Nu___bee: When I went into the performance part, the "use drop shadows" was already checked. I did uncheck it and then check it again and APPLY, but this did not help. I tried a lot of other things in this area. but nothing seems to help.
