I cannot change my desktop display from a simple solid color. Whenever I restart the computer the picture I was using for my background is there but when the computer boots up and all my shortcuts are displayed there is only a solid color for a background.

Open System Properties in Control Panel, choose the Advanced tab, and click Settings in the Performance section. Turn on the Use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop option, and click Ok.

I did as you said and this did not work. Any other ideas on how to fix it? It is driving me nuts!

SOrry I misread your first post. I thought you were having problems wit hthe text of the icons showing in a solid block. Make sure the file you were using for your wallpaper wasn't in a temporary location then try again

OH MY GOD!!! Nothing works! It stays on the none selection and only offers the solid color option. What does it mean when it shows some of the .bmp's in blue and some in black in the directory listing? I have tried using one my own jpegs and that doesn't work either! Please help....

Right click the desktop / properties / customize / web ....uncheck lock desktop items and make sure there is nothing checked in the web pages box.

Well, winnie the pooh ....two things to try ...open a picture in windows picture and fax viewer and right click the picture and choose set as desktop background.
    If that doesn't work ....
    Panda online active scan

Or try to do a system restore.
