I didn't realize there were different sizes of desktop drives, I pulled the thinner one out of my all and one because it failed. Is the thinner one called something else?

External drives - if that's what you mean - come in varied sizes and shapes. You could just go to the websites of the manufacturers of those two and read about them.

They are both seagates, I guess I just have never seen one that was thinner than the other.

Are they different storage sizes? some have more platters, hence the height difference.

An "all-in-one" should not be considered a "desktop" computer in the same sense a PC or desktop computer computer is. An "all-in-one" is basically a notebook computer mounted in the back of a big monitor. So it would make sense an all-in-one would use a smaller drive to save space. I am actually surprised that is not a 2.5" drive to take up even less space. I am assuming since weight is not an issue with an all-in-one, the 3.5" format saves money.

foogoo is also right. Larger capacity drives may have more platters (the actual "disks" inside the drives) stacked on the spinning spindle with multiple read/write head arms moving across to read and write the data. More platters take up more space.
