Desktop Icon Question

Why would my desktop icons suddenly change position? None were missing, but they had an icon-sized space (for lack of a better description!) between them. They went back to "normal" after a system restart, but this is the first time my desktop icons have done this. I'm running Windows 10 Home Version 1909 Build 18363.1139. All my programs/drivers are up to date.

 

Sounds like something crashed or maybe a cache issue. Did you use something like CCleaner prior to this happening?

If it is now fine and it was a one time thing then it isn't anything to worry about.

 

Did the icons move or just change shape/size/spacing? Windows has always had an issue keeping icon arrangements that is why there are tools out there to save 'your desktop'. But the resolution of the screen can change them too, along with hold CTRL and scrolling with the mouse / touchpad.

 

I had that problem - all my 30 desktop icons went walkabouts.
Install Desksave - https://desksave.en.uptodown.com/windows
No more problems - all icons restored to the primary layout.

 

I’ve noticed this on occasion when playing a game which has a lower resolution than is set for Windows.
Could this be the cause for you?

 

Christmas Eve - As a result of messing around with Display, all my desktop icons went walkies.
No problem - I enabled Desksave and immediately all the icons were returned to normal in a split second.
