I followed "Read and Run Me First Before Asking for Support" however after I ran all the on-line scans and tried to boot in Safe Mode all I got was a black screen with Safe Mode appearing in the corners. When I tried a normal boot I got to the user accounts and when I clicked on them all I got was the background picture without any icons or start button. Can anyone help ?

Is this a fresh install? BY deault there arn't suppost to be any desktop icons, besides form the recycle bin in the bottom right. If you want my computer and such to appear on the desktop you'd have to right click the tskbar, select properties->start menu tab->classic start menu. Then hit apply.

This isn't a fresh install. The icons will not appear after I ran the on-line scans in the thread I mentioned

Download this registry patch to your desktop or somewhere else you can find it, then use Windows Explorer to locate this nodesktop.reg file and double click on it. Say YES when it asks you about adding to the registry.

    Thanks for the reply Matacumbie...
I get nothing on the desktop when I boot. I can get to the C prompt. I'll have to dl the patch to a zip drive off my sons computer. Can I install this patch from the comand prompt off of that...or what is the best way to proceed????

    Thanks again

Bring up the Task Manager, press and hold down ctrl > alt > delete. In Task Manager, click File > New Task (run), and type explorer.exe. This should start windows explorer and you can access things from there, program files, ie, etc.

IF Matacumbie's suggestion does not work (and I have seen where it does not work), use the following:

Can you use the following keys, by pressing and holeing down: CTRL + ALT + DEL? (until taskmanager appears, should be quite quick).

This should bring up the task manager.

Insert the floppy that contains the file that Metacrumbie...errr...Matacumbie ( :) ) posted. then, click File, Run, type in: a:\nodesktop.reg (press enter), then select yes, then OK.

Thanks for all the help everyone but I am going to have to do a new install. Explorer is gone, iexplore is gone. I am going to remove the hard drive and connect it to another computer, remove the files I want to keep then do a clean install. This used computer I got was so full of scumware that it was wishful thinking to believe that I could get it all out without doing a clean install. Again thanks to all that helped.

You didn't mention IE not working before. I think I know what is wrong with it, let us know if you change your mind about reinstalling.

    It's a simple registry fix.
