Since you have all folders able to be seen, you see the desktop.ini file. You can safely remove them all, though this may impact any icon's you have changed. Always best to pop them in the recycle bin for a little bit and make sure nothing you like changes.:)

Hmmm, they appeared under my "admin" user account in the startup menu(folder) as well as in start-programs list.
I'm assuming it's safe to delete those as well?

    Sure, but they rebuild themselves.

I've not heard of one. Its a function of the OS. Don't show hidden files and folders if it bugs you that much.

Here is a link that you can try at your own risk. Always remember to save a restore point first.:)

Cannot promise anything with that link, but I have read somewhere that there are registry changes you can make to stop them from appearing. It has to do with removing your Active desktop or something like that. Try googling the question "remove desktop.ini" in different ways and read, read, read. If I find it, I will post it.

    Good luck.:)

They probably will return, but it's not a big deal, just leave them. They contain custom settings and configuration information for folders.

If you don't want to see them, make sure they are hidden and don't enable show hidden files and folders.
