lol! I know it's not a good use of resources but I've hooked up my 26" widescreen up as dual monitor and it would look smart!!
The problem with running it as a screen saver is that I wouldn't be able to show off ;)

If somebody could do one as an animated .gif image, that would run as desktop wallpaper, and be animated in Windows XP. I'm not an artist, but flame flickering shouldn't be too difficult to do.

Quite the opposite - Drawing flames to look as 'free' as they actually are is hard - and thats not animated.

The best bet as you say is to get a video of a fireplace 'flickering' and to split it into frames and compile the frames as a gif.

It would have to fit your screen , as being stretched it would look awful.

Or if the fireplace doesn't pan out, and you still want something animated, there are lots of spinning globe animated .gifs out there. Use one of those, centered, not stretched, and change your background color to black. Doesn't look too bad and doesn't tie up a ton of cpu cycles. I found this one with a Google search and it looks and works fine.

I forgot - the original image is 561k - that's a scaled down version up there - PM me if you want the bigger one.

There are all kinds of fireplace DVD's out there. Worst case, assuming you have a DVD player in your computer and REALLY want this, buy one of those, run it full screen in PowerDVD or any other software that allows you to advance one frame at a time, do screen captures of each frame, and build your own animated .gif. with the pictures.
