I assume by "it" you mean the pop-up menu. Sometimes an overload of desktop icons will cause this or a corrupt icon cache file may be the problem.

How could I tell if one would be corrupt?

To clear the icon cache make sure you can view hidden files and then open your Windows directory in Explorer and delete the file called "ShellIconCache".

When you restart Windows the icon cache file will be automatically recreated.

Did you make sure "show hidden files" was checked off?

    XP pro-iconcache.

Just refresh the icon cache by deleting the IconCache.db file from your profile directory (usually /Documents and Settings/Username/Local Settings/Application Data).

    It will be automatically recreated.
