    Heya -

I've had my comp for 2 1/2 years and have managed to make it through without any major problems. Unfortunately soemthign has happened now and I don't know how to fix it. My desktop wallpaper disappeared and now all I get is the solid color that it's set to in the desktop properties (even though it shows there the picture I have set as my wallpaper). http://forums.majorgeeks.com/images/smilies/mad.gif

Anyway, it's really buggin. I found another thread here and I've gone through the steps that have been posted. However, my background is still gone. You will notice that I don't have SP2 on my comp but that is because microsoft will not allow me to install it. So if you can help me solve my desktop wallpaper problem I'd appreciate it. Then I can figure out the whole SP2 thing.

I attached the log from HijackThis. Thanks for any help.

Copy the contents of the Quote Box below to Notepad. Then click File and then Save As. Change the Save as Type to All Files. Name the file desktopfix.reg and then click save. (make sure you save it somewhere you can find it. Saving it to your Desktop may make that easy.)

Double-click on the desktopfix.reg file on your desktop (or locate it with Windows Explorer and double click on it if not saved to the Desktop) and when it prompts to merge, click YES!

    Final Step:

Right Click on your desktop, click properties, click the Desktop Tab, click Customize Desktop, click the Web Tab. Now, uncheck everything in this tab.

After you have completed ALL of the above, reboot and see if problem remains!

What exactly is going on here?

Are you having multiple reboots and the desktop background?

bjgarrick can you confirm the registry value is correct.
Was there a ' - ' before the HKEY because I exported a similar value from my regedit and it dint have the - in the begining.Could that have wiped out the current user tab.

newgroove if you are still having reboots try safe mode or another user.

Yes, that key is the correct one for a Malware infection removal that messes up your desktop.

The - tells registry editor to remove the key.

Safe Mode doesnt work either, same results. Cant get to any user accounts, user doesnt have OS disk for repair reinstall so user has decided to take PC to local computer shop.

    Thanks for the help though.

    Just an update:

So Best Buy (who my warranty is through) has been trying to fix my computer. They called this morning and said that they couldn't access the OS but they could do a repair for $59. The other option was to just wipe out the hard drive and start from scratch. Fortunately I was able to take out my hard drives and hook 'em up into another computer and backup my data.

Sooo, I told them to just wipe it out. Anyway, they called me just an hour ago and told me that they couldn't format it and that they wanted to try with my restore cds. I don't quite get it but whatever. So they have my computer and my restore cds.

...I didn't realize how much free time my life has without my computer....http://forums.majorgeeks.com/images/smilies/frown.gif

    Keep those fingers crossed....

Personally, they sound like complete idiots!

A repair can be done if you know what your doing. Also, if a technician cant do a format, they dont need to be near a computer.;)

They want to format because its easier on them. A repair is all your OS needs, they just need to learn more about their jobs before attempting this type work. They probably cant do it because they're using the wrong disk lol.

    Anyway keep me informed!

    Good Luck!

Well, I got my computer back. Unfortunately there were no answers from good ol' Best Buy. The hard drive just got wiped and that was that. So I have NO idea what happened. But now it's back to reinstalling everything. I spent an hour hooking up my wireless card - best buy had left their internet settings in my options so it was screwing it up.

Anyway, I just thought I'd let ya'll know. Wish me luck as I reinstall everything!

So it turned out that it's a hardware problem because it bonked out on me again within a day of having it. I think the hard drive has gone bad - dangit. At least I can have it replaced for free. So once again, it's in the shop again. This is sooooo not going to be an every weekend thing. *sigh* http://forums.majorgeeks.com/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif lol.
