I recently bought a used Dell x300 with XP Pro after my old one broke. All was well until I updated to FF3. I have been trying to figure out why FF3 keeps crashing for days. I finally think I figured out today that it is java that is crashing it. After uninstalling and reinstalling Java, the crashes seem to have stopped but now FF keeps saying that I need to install JRE but I already have installed, uninstalled with JavaRA, reinstalled, tried installing diff versions and even uninstalled all FF plugins. It is pissing me off.

The box to run java and javascript are checked. The console won't open through the control panel--when i click on it nothing happens. What should I do? I am at my wits end here...I want to keep firefox because I have generally been happy with it prior to now, use it on my desktop, and tried Opera but didn't like its adblocking. FF2 will no longer be supported in a few weeks. I don't know why FF3 isn't detecting java when it is clearly installed and even in the about: plugins menu!?!

    Please help. Thanks so much.

Did you try the previous version of Java, v 6, update 7? Here's a link to it: http://www.oldapps.com/java.htm

JavaRa will only delete "old" versions and not the current newest version so therefore it won't work if you have only the most current Java installed.

I've used the Revo Uninstaller to remove the dang Java 6, update 10 and chose the last option on the list. http://majorgeeks.com/Revo_Uninstaller_d5706.html and went back to the previous version. Now FF works fine.

If you have v 6 update 10 installed it will automatically install an add-on in Firefox without asking you. It's called Java Quick Starter. You cannot uninstall through Firefox. Go to Control Panel, double click Java. In the Java control panel, click the Advanced tab. Click the + in front of the Miscellaneous and uncheck the Java Quick Starter box to remove the add-on.

    Hope it helps.
