I am running windows xp service pack 2 on a 1.5ghz pentium 4 computer.

Device manager is not showing any devices connected to the USB2 port hub. I have disconnected these devices, including the usb2 hub, and reinstalled but it says there is problem with the hardware.

So I thought check through device manager but lo and behold - zilch is showing in device manager not even the normal tree

Any advice woudl gratefully rec'd. Thanks

How about plugging them in straight to the USB2 port, instead of the hub?

    erikske,

Thanks. This computer is old and has usb1 ports on the Motherboard. It also has i/o card that means usb2 devices can work. They were working up till about 2-3 weeks ago. I have looked on the microsoft forum but they suggestions don't work - I guess i will have to reinstall windows XP

    Reinstalling Microsoft Task Manager
To reinstall the Microsoft Task Manager:

NOTE: You must be logged on as Administrator or as a member of the Administrators group in order to perform this procedure.

    1. Click Start , click Run , and then type the following command:

    %systemroot%\inf

NOTE : There are no spaces at all in the preceding command line.

    2. Click OK to open the INF folder.
    3. Locate the file mstask.inf

Right-click the file, and then click Install . This will reinstall the files that Search needs to proceed normally.

You will be asked to place your windows XP cd rom in the drive.

Note# I have only tried on XP Pro

I found this when searching the web:
    Code:
    1. Go to Start, Run, and enter regedit and select OK
    2. Maximize the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE window.
    3. Scroll down to SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum
    4. With Enum selected click the Security option from the Top of the screen then the Permissions menu.

Note: At this point you will probably notice there are no permissions on this key.

    5. Click Add
    6. Add the group Everyone and the user SYSTEM
    7. Select Everyone and check only the Read box
    8. Select SYSTEM and check Full Control
    9. Click the Advanced button at the bottom of the window.
    10. On the Advanced window check Reset permissions on all child objects
    11. Click OK
    12. On the warning window click Yes
    13. Close REGEDIT

Re-boot the system if necessary and then check the device manager to see if everything is showing now.
You can also try this Microsoft solution (if you haven't already)
