    Hope this is the right forum for this issue.

    I have 2 Other Devices w/exclamation points in Device Mgr. and can't fix them. I received excellent help in the Vista forum from sach2--outstanding website for assistance for me as I'm not a pc guru and trying to get this going for a neighbor.

    I used Unknown Device Identifier 8.00 and it found one of them as follows:
    @system32\drivers\pci.sys,#3077,SM Bus Controller (UNKNOWN DEVICE)
    Chip = Nvidia nForce PCI System Management
    PnpID = VEN_10DE&DEV_0542&SUBSYS_30F103C&REV_A2
    Vendor = None
    Device = @system32\drivers\pci.sys,#3077,SM Bus Controller
    Chip Vendor = Nvidia
    Chip = nForce System Management

    The other is only Unknown Device listed in Device Mgr. (Unknown Device Identifier didn't list this one).

    I've already tried going to Properties of ea. device and Update Driver with no success. I also had Coprocessor as Other Device, but fixed that one using DriverMax, but since I was a free user I was limited to 1 driver d/load a day. (What a rip--lol)

    Thanks in advance for any help u can offer

    Here's a trial and error solution that may work:

    Go to the motherboard or PC mfr's website. If it is a pre-built PC (Dell, HP, etc.) search the model # or service code (Dell) in driver and download support.

    Look at the list of available driver downloads and start the process of elimination. If audio, video, networking, etc. in Device Manager all show a properly installed driver, start looking for other items such as card readers in the list of available drivers on the website.

    This is a bit time consuming; however I (knock on wood) have yet to have an issue where attempting to install a driver that may or may not be the missing or corrupt one has damaged Windows. Usually if you attempt to install a driver for a nonexistent device from the official mfr. driver website, Windows will tell you it can't find the hardware and stop the install.

    Hope this helps. :)

    Greetings, empty_pockets...

    Almost invariably the Small Machine Bus Controller software is part of the Chipset driver package. If you go to the driver download page as pointed out by gman863 pay particular attention to any chipset references (looks like it's an nForce board), and if you do install a new chipset driver package make sure you reboot for any changes to take effect.

    Hi guys,

    I remembered we had looked up that model and just want to drop the link to the download page.

    I got that link from the p/n number so I am assuming it is correct even though it seems to be in the 9600 series rather than 9500.

    At any rate I think the chipset download should be fine. As far as the "other device" I hope either Gman or Caliban can offer further advice. I am not very good with drivers other than trial and error.

    Some on the board like slimdrivers to keep drivers up to date. I don't know if it helps finding drivers for unknown devices.

    Hey, hey guys--pat yourselves on the back, have a beer, go pat the dancing girls on the butt--whatever u need to do to congratulate yourselves. U're all OK--I don't care WHAT they say about u when u're not around.

    Device Mgr. is as happy as a drunk in a brewery. I installed the chipset pkg. days ago, but reinstalled it again as per your thoughts. Rebooted and no more "SM Bus Controller" in Other Devices. Looked better.

    Then, in the remaining "Unknown Device", opened Properties>Driver tab>
    Update Driver just to see if she'd pop or fizzle. It searched online and installed s'ware for "Unknown Device"--turned out to be HP Quick Launch Buttons. It looks like a Device Mgr. oughta look now.

    Will do a couple of s'ware installs, tweak it a bit (turn off unneeded services, startup entries, defrag, etc.) and get this old hog outta here. It's a beautiful day in emptypockets neighborhood.

    Once again--many, many thanks to ALL of u.
