Did I do the right thing?

Hi, Im back again, I graduated last month. But Im wondering if I did the right thing this time, I think I majorly screwed up. Here is the details:

1. A girl I was chatting to online was threatening suicide. She said she had a gun and went offline.
2. I got worried and contacted her local police. The next day I was worrying myself sick.
3. The next day, a third party told me that she was fine but no longer allowed to talk to me by her father.
4. A few hours later, another third party told me that the whole thing was just a joke.
5. Then I went to bed and overnight this girl posted nasty things about me on a message board we are both on and implying that I contacted the police on her for no reason whatsoever than an argument.
6. I posted on the message board about the "joke" so people would know why I did it.
7. Everyone else on the message board blamed me for it and they all started hating on me and saying I was stupid for not realizing it was a joke and nobody wanted me there anyways.
8. I quit the message board.

So, what do you all think of this?
