    Hi,

My father recently opened an email message from a friend and then bad things started to happen. He got warnings about keyloggers, root kits, etc.

I had him shut down and I have tried to follow the instructions here. His computer would only boot to safe mode if disconnected from the internet. After running all the steps, I couldn't find the Super AntiSpyware log file so I ran it again and noticed Rogue.MalwareDefense. I will upload this log when the scan completes.

After running through the steps listed here, things appear to be much better, but when he logs on, the browser opens to trendmicro.com and asks him to purchase updated software.

Please take a look at the attached logfiles and let me know if the system is clean or if further steps are necessary. Note that I will be upgrading his AVG to version 9 after we're sure the system is clean.

    Thanks,

    BlueTurf

The below fixes and advice are specific to this member's problem and should be used for issue(s) on this machine only.

Hello, blueturf - please do not install any other software while we are still working with you unless instructed. Once we have given you the all clean and final instructions you will be free to install what you want.

I strongly recommend that you clean up this account's Desktop immediately leaving only links.[ C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Administrator\Desktop ] Do not store downloads, exe files, iso files....etc on your Desktop. First it is not a safe place to keep them (i.e., you may loose them due to malware, and a cluttered Desktop is an easy hiding place for malware), and last but not least - it can have an effect on your PCs performance.

COMMENT: There have been many new releases to Mozilla Firefox, that include security enhancements. Consider updating from your very old (2.0) version.

    Step 1:
Run this Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

    Step 2:
Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Step 3: Now we need to use ComboFix.
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware, firewall...etc) programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. *Remember to re-start them before coming back online.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into it (make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
If it asks you to overide the previous file with the same name, click YES.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
      http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif
    • Follow the prompts.

    Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Step 7:
Open CCleaner - select "Cleaner" > "Run Cleaner" <---use this function ONLY!

    Step 10:
Then run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

Please attach the new C:\MGlogs.zip file to your next reply.

    * Make sure you tell me if you had any problems running this procedure and give a description of how things are working now!

    Thank you dr. m.

I have cleaned up the desktop folder as recommended and followed all other steps as outlined. I will wait until getting a clean bill of health before updating FireFox and other software on this computer.

I have attached the MGLogs.zip file.

Thank you again for your help!

    Let's re-do a part of my fix:

Now we need to use ComboFix.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below

    Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Now download Registry Search (see the link titled RegSearch Download Link )
    • Create a folder in your C: drive C:\Regsearch, and extract the files from Regsearch.zip into that folder.
    • Doubleclick regsearch.exe to start the program.
    • See the top 3 boxes under the Enter search strings (case independent) and click Ok... option, and enter the below string (use copy and paste)
      • CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497
    • Then click "OK".
    • Notepad will be opened with text in it (the file named RegSearch.txt will be saved in the program's folder as well).
    • Attach this RegSearch.txt file.

Now - update the definition databases for both SAS & MBAM and run new "Quick Scans"

Then run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

Attach these logs to your next reply:
    • updated SASLog.txt
    • updated MBAMLog.txt
    • RegSearch.txt file
    • MGLogs.zip

    * Make sure you tell me if you had any problems running this procedure; and answer this - "What malware problems are you still experiencing?"
