Spybot search and destroy kept finding virtumonde but couldn't take it off. I ran CCleaner. I tried to run SAS but the computer wouldn't let me install anything. I ran Malwarebytes and then combofix. Please tell me where I go from here. The computer is acting much better, I have taskmanager back. However I still cannot install anything. I know this computer needs a firewall.(this is my nieces) Do my logs look ok? Thank you so much for all your help!

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

You need to run all of the READ & RUN ME. Did you start at the beginning of the below link? If not, please do so. You need to attach the log from MGtools as requested.

Yes I did start at the beginning of the link. I can't do the SAS or the MGTools. I can't install anything.Yesterday I started getting the error 1500, out of the blue after I installed and ran the ccleaner. Also MGTools has a note next to it that says don't run on a 64 computer. I am running xp on a AMD Athlon 64. So if I can somehow get the computer to install, is it ok to run it? My spybot came back clean this time no threats found. And I did get my task mangager back. If you would like I can rerun the ccleaner, spybot, Malwarebytes, and the combofix, they are already on the computer. Thanks for trying to help me.

Please always give the exact word for word error message.

You are running Windows XP. The question is are you running Windows XP 64 bit or is it the 32 bit version? It is not a question of what processor type. Try running MGtools and attaching the logs.

Ok I can't install anything, so I can't run the MGTOOLS. "Error 1500. "Another installation is in progress. You must complete that installation before continuing this one."
However nothing is running. Tried in safe mode, same thing.
    Any ideas?

MGtools does not truly install anything in the sense of a Windows installation. Did you even try it?

You error is most likely due to a real Windows Installation or Uninstall that has failed. Yo may want to give the below a run:

    Windows Installer CleanUp Utility

Here is the MGTOOLS log. I'm so sorry about earlier,I feel pretty stupid. I thought it was a download like the SAS that I couldn't get to install. Thanks for all your help.

Open Windows Explorer by right clicking Start and selecting Explore. Navigate to the C:\MGtools folder and find the analyse.exe and run it by double clicking it. When the TrendMicro Hijackthis license agreement comes up, make sure you click on the Accept button TWICE to agree to the license. Then just exit HijackThis.

Run this Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

Now download The Avenger by Swandog46, and save it to your Desktop.
    • Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    • Do not change any check box options!!
    • Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the Input script here: part of the window:
    • Now click the Execute button.
    • Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    • Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when Avenger finishes running.
    • Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    • A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will popup for you to view when you login after reboot.

Now see if you can uninstall the below software:
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
    Viewpoint Media Player

Make sure you reboot after uninstalling the above!

After reboot, now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment

Also delete all files in the below folder except ones from the current date (Windows will not let you delete the files from the current day).
    C:\WINDOWS\Temp\

    Now run Ccleaner!

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it.

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\avenger.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

ok I got a success message for the fixme.reg. I was able to remove Viewpoint Media Player. I was not able to remove J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6. Also I was not able to install the windows Installer cleaner utility. I had the same error "Another installation is in progress. You must complete that installation before continuing this one." Here are the avenger and MCTOOLS logs. Thank you .

Did you forget to run this Disable/Remove Windows Messenger Did you use Remove? Please run it again and be sure to check remove. Your Windows Installer issues will probably have to be worked out in the Software Forum but let's continue with your malware cleanup first and we will remove a couple of things from Microsoft that may be related to the installer issue.

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Reminder] "C:\Windows\Creator\Remind_XP.exe"
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HP Software Update] C:\Program Files\HP\HP Software Update\HPwuSchd2.exe
    O15 - Trusted Zone: *.doginhispen.com
    O15 - Trusted Zone: *.whataboutadog.com
    O15 - Trusted Zone: http://*.trymedia.com (HKLM)

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop (yes overwrite the previous file). Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Make sure that you tell me if you receive a success message about adding the above
to the registry. If you do not get a success message, it definitely did not work.

Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.

After reboot look for all of the above files we had Avenger attempt to delete. If you still see them, delete them yourself.

    Now run Ccleaner!

Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it.

    Then attach the below logs:
    • C:\avenger.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Hello, I received the success message for the fixme.reg. After running the avenger I couldn't find any of the files, so I hope it worked. Everything seems ok, except the install\uninstall problem. Here are the logs. Thank you again for all your help. I really appreciate it.

Okay your logs are clean. The running process list in your HijackThis log includes the below:

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\msiexec.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\MsiExec.exe

Those are two instances of Windows installer trying to run. This is a typical sign of a failed install or uninstall. You should do the below final instructions (at the end of this message) and then post about this installer issue in the Software Forum. It would be helpful if you posted an EventLog for them to look at. You can also look at it yourself to see if you can determine where the failure is occurring.

    Do the following:
    Start -> Run
    type eventvwr.msc
    Click 'OK'

Then select Application and see if you can locate the Windows Installer application in the log. Double click on any item to get more info.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. You can uninstall SUPERAntiSpyware now.
    2. We recommed you keep Malwarebytes Anti-Malware as a scanner. It uses no resources except a little disk space until you run a scan.
    3. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop & renamed it like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\cf" /u
        • Notes: The space between the cf" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
      • Delete the C:\cf folder from combofix.
    4. If we used SmitFraudFix, you can delete all files and folders related to it now including the c:\rapport.txt log.
    5. If we used VundoFix, you can delete the VundoFix.exe file and the C:\VundoFix Backups folder and C:\vundofix.txt log that was created.
    6. If we had you run Avenger, you can delete all files related to Avenger now.
    7. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    8. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    9. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    10. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    11. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning steps in the READ ME for your Window version and see the steps to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    12. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
