    Hello, I've been directed here from the software forum where I had made a post concerning my problems updating to WinXP sp3 from sp2. I've successfully installed several other windows updates, but sp3 and a couple of the .net framework updates flat out refuse to be installed.
    I'm following the Read & Run First guide, so I'll post my logs below. Cheers for any help provided.

    Note: Somehow, a couple years ago, I managed to add a couple extra "drives" using Daemon Tools and have been unable to get rid of them. Also I installed the Anapod Explorer to manage my iPod, and it too made 2 extra drives that i can't get rid of, nor can I get rid of the program itself. I mention this because the malware programs I've run for this post are seeing 2 extra drives on my computer, and I'm not sure if they are from the Daemon Tools or the Anapod Explorer.

    Apologies for double post, but I can't seem to find the 'Edit' button. I'm having trouble running RootReveal; it starts and then gives an error saying that my virtual memory is too low, then appears to stop responding. I've left it running overnight last night thinking it may just be running slowly, but my system was still unresponsive this morning.

    Attaching logs to this post as I can't edit the first.

    You should read this:
    Warning about Porn, Keygens, Cracks, and other Illegal Software

    Do you know what this is:
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\sptd9661.sys
    Right click it and tell me what you find.

    * Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
    If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    * Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    * If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    * Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into it (make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    Driver::
    mlhov
    YEZJOH

    File::

    * Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    * At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    * You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    If it asks you to overide the previous file with the same name, click YES.
    * Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif
    * Follow the prompts.
    * When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    * I will ask for this log below

    Note:

    Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:

    * C:\ComboFix.txt
    * C:\MGlogs.zip

    Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    Hello, sir, and thank you for your help here.

    I do not know what that file is. I opened the file properties on it and it just says that it's an scsi port driver. As far as the porn, etc., I'm not running anything to my knowledge that was obtained illegally and I'm not really in the habit of looking at porn on this machine. That's not to say it has never happened, though, to be sure.

    While running ComboFix I had an error come up that said something about SWREG.EXE, or something similar(The mouse pointer is set to snap to the default button in windows and I accidently tapped the touchpad, which closed the error window). I tried to get a screen cap of the error, but I assume it wasdiscarded when ComboFix rebooted my system.

    Logs attached as requested.

    That's what I wanted to know. Don't delete it.
    It wasn't porn that I was referring to, it was cracks and key gen's. A very good way to be infected.

    We don't have much else to do, so let's just do this:

    Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

    Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

    Code:

    c:\windows\system32\SET793.tmp
    c:\windows\system32\SET246.tmp
    c:\windows\system32\SET6E9.tmp
    c:\windows\system32\SET69A.tmp

    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{5C255C8A-E604-49b4-9D64-90988571CECB}]

    Now run SAS and MBAM on the other Admin. account and let me know if it finds anything ( attach the logs if it does ).

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).Make sure that you watch for the license agreement for TrendMicro HijackThis and click on the Accept button TWICE to accept ( yes twice ).

    I got the same error as my above post from ComboFix. I'm not quick enough to copy down the error, but it's something to do with memory unable to be read.

    I need you to run SAS and MBAM on this user account:
    Code:
    Yes    | HsUser_CWo0Up6fDpe
    Now download The Avenger by Swandog469, and save it to your Desktop.

    * Extract+ avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop

    Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

    * Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    * -Do not change any check box options!!
    * Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the Input script here: part of the window:

    * Now click the Execute button.
    * Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    * Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when Avenger finishes running.
    * Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    * A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will popup for you to view when you login after reboot.

    Now run Ccleaner to clean out only temp files and nothing else!

    Then attach the below logs:

    * C:\Avenger.txt
    * C:\MGlogs.zip

    I don't know if I understand you right about running these scans on that account. I never set up this computer to have multiple user accounts, so I hope I've done the right thing and just run them as normal. I apologize for wasting your time if this is not what you meant, and I thank you for your efforts in helping me. It is a good thing all of you guys do here.

    Your logs are clean. I wanted you to run the two scans on that user account. Did you not create it? If you didn't, run the scans on it. If they come back clean, then just delete it.
    Code:
    Users on this computer:
    Is Admin? | Username
    ------------------
       Yes    | Administrator
              | ASPNET
              | Guest (Disabled)
              | HelpAssistant (Disabled)
       Yes    | HsUser_CWo0Up6fDpe [COLOR=DarkRed]--> This one!![/COLOR]
       Yes    | Owner

    I tried to create a new account and name it HsUser_CWo0Up6fDpe and got a message saying that the user already exists. I realize I probably seem like a complete tool here, but I don't know how to access any account other than the main one. I have the guest account turned off and I can't find any option to switch to another account. Is it a hidden account or something?
    I've been using computers for a long time, but I'm still kinda green when it comes to trying to make repairs/troubleshoot, I guess.

    Go to the control panel, click on User Accounts and you should see that account. You can delete it there. Alternatively, try switching users and log into that account. If you can, run both SAS and MBAM on it.

    Ok, I've gone back into the user accounts window from the control panel looking for another account. It only shows the owner account. I then clicked the start button and logged out to see if maybe I could log into another account from the welcome screen, but it only shows the owner account as well. Here's a screen cap of my user acounts window:

    http://i357.photobucket.com/albums/oo12/SnwDvl/For%20the%20Site/th_UserAccounts.jpg

    I tried again to create an account with the name you asked me to run the scans on, and I got the same message about the user already existing. All apologies if I'm doing something wrong.

    On another note, if I can't get this problem sorted soon, I will be in the market for a rather large(preferably red) hammer! :cry

    Try booting into safe mode and again go into the control panel and see if it shows up in User accounts. Since it is listed as having Admin. privileges, I am concerned as to where this came from. You may need to post separately in the software forum for advice on how to remove it, since it isn't showing up in normal mode.

    I still can't access the account. I did find it in the registry, though, after some light googling of hidden user accounts. Can I disable/delete it from there?

  15. TimW

    TimW MajorGeeks Administrator - Jedi Malware Expert Staff Member

    Export your registry to your desktop in case something goes amiss ( make a backup of it). Then yes, delete it in the registry.

  16. SnwDvl

    SnwDvl Private E-2

    Ok, registry backed up to desktop, questionable account deleted, and nothing exploded. Didn't even smoke a little bit. Should I run CCleaner's registry tool or anything now?

  17. TimW

    TimW MajorGeeks Administrator - Jedi Malware Expert Staff Member

    Good job. Yes, now would be a good time to run CCLeaners registry cleaner. Again, make the backup when prompted. I am still very curious about where that account came from and what it was trying to do on your system. However, now you can return to your software thread and see if you can get any help with SP3 ( as I stated previously, some systems just will not upgrade to it. )

    If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real time protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.We recommend them for doing backup scans when you suspect a malware infection.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.

    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
        for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
