DirectX happy uninstall Problem

I was having an error code issue with my directX 9.0c so I decided to try and uninstall it using a program called directX happy uninstall. It worked fine in removing it with my operating system still remaining stable, but when I went into try and reinstall directX 8.1 using my CD it didn't copy all of the files and also for some reason I cannot even update directX at all now. It tells me that 9.0c was succesful when I try to install it but if I go into directX it is still showing me 8.1 and still missing files. Does anyone know what has happend and how I can fix this without having to restore or format?
