Word 2016 (in Office 365) has this awesome new feature where you right click on a misspelt word, and not only do you get spelling suggestions for the word, you also get a definition of each suggested word (see below left).

Does anyone know how to turn it off?
I've looked all over, and it's not even mentioned. I want my old list of words back, with no definitions (see below right).

As plodr says that may help. I have spent a few hours trying to find out more, and other than a registry hack, that had not yet proved working, for business versions only, there were pages on Microsofts sites of people wanting the same as you, and as far as I can gather, Microsoft has just removed the option in Office 365 , that was possible, in previous versions. I did see somewhere that it might be reinstallable this winter, as they seem to be working on it
I don't know if this will help -

Thanks, plodr. I already have a Custom Dictionary.
Thanks baklogic. Very kind of you to spend that amount of time on this. I've looked at all your links and things - still no help. looks like I'll have to wait until winter- yours, rather than mine, i hope.
i did look some more, encouraged by your having found at least something on this, and discovered that the context menu does give the old style list. All you have to do is right click on the misspelt word, then click on 'see more' at the bottom of the menu (see above). this opens the spell checker, so you have to move the cursor over to there, then click on the spelling option you want, then click on the Change button, then move the cursor back to where you were.
Almost as good as a right click and a left click under the old system...
Does MS have a department called the 'What shall we mess with next department'?
BTW, where did you find that registry hack. i wouldn't mind having a go at it.
I couldn't find any of those pages on MS sites where people are complaining about this. You've had a lot more success than me!

I don't know if there is a reason that this is for Mac, and whether it would be the same in windows.

When you see a spelling or grammatical error, Control click the word or phrase and choose one of the options.
(I would think that means press control button as you click the word ??) baklogic

Turn on (or off) automatic spelling and grammar checking

On the Word menu, click Preferences > Spelling & Grammar.

      • In the
Spelling & Grammar dialog box, under Spelling, check or clear the Check spelling as you type box.
        Under
Grammar, check or clear the Check grammar as you type box.
Close the dialog box to save your changes.

        Outlook 2016 for Mac
      • When you see a word with a dashed underline, Control click the word or phrase and choose one of the options.

        1. On the shortcut menu, do one of the following
Click one of the guesses at the top of the shortcut menu. Click Ignore Spelling to ignore one instance of the word. Click Learn Spelling to add the word to the spelling dictionary.

Turn on (or off) automatic spelling and grammar checking

        After opening an email message:
To turn automatic spell checking on or off, on the
Edit menu, point to Spelling and Grammar, and then click Check Spelling While Typing.

        • To turn automatic grammar checking on or off, on the
Edit menu, point to Spelling and Grammar, and then click Check Grammar with Spelling.
To have Outlook correct spelling mistakes automatically, on the
Edit menu, point to Spelling and Grammar, and then click Correct Spelling Automatically

In researching this ----Things I did not know, in Office 365, but apparently
Due to a change that MS made in the Selection Change Event of Word 2016, a right click no longer triggers the event. You MUST first LEFT click the misspelled word to trigger the event then right click to see the AutoCorrect utility.

Thanks again, baklogic. I've checked out all of the above. Still no joy.
If I Ctrl + Right Click on a word, it tells me to 'Make a selection first'. So i select the word, and it tells me 'This is not a valid selection'. I looked this up, and it appear to be common. One poster found that selecting text, then Ctrl + RC somewhere else moves the text to the cursor position. I tried all options with the Ctrl, Shift and Alt keys, but to no avail.
This appears to be an issue on the Office 365 ProPlus version. A laptop i just checked has 365 Business, and doesn't have that problem. Looks like you have to pay more to get the problem.

The business edition was the one I saw the registry hack for, funnily enough, so perhaps all business editions are not the same, as the haacck was to enable changing grammar. I have not been ble to find it again, because it was a link from a link, but , yes, there were hundreds of people with this problem. If I do find a hack somewhere, before Microsoft fix it, I will post it back here.

Yes, that is probably the only way at present.

It's actually a fix for the ProPlus that I need. Perhaps MS will fix that in one of these millennia also.
