is it possible in XP to disable dragging a file or folder when you right-click on it?

I can't find any way to do that - you can disable drag & drop altogether (L and R buttons), but not just the right one.
Perhaps if you say why you want to do that, someone might have an alternative to suggest.:)

    thanks for your reply

well, the reason is because I am using a pen graphics tablet as a mouse

when I right click on, for example, a folder on my desktop, sometimes the pen moves slightly between pressing right-click (a button on the pen) and releasing the right click, so then I accidentally trigger that small context menu asking me if I want to Copy the folder or Move the folder to there

Good problem! I can only think of turning down the pen sensitivity (which may have other negatives), or disabling drag and drop. Someone else might have a better idea though. :confused

pen sensitivity can't be adjusted but if it could, it would indeed bring a negative side-effect: unresponsiveness

what I did notice however is that XP has a few pixels of "error margin" on dragging

when I right-click on an icon and move the mouse (pen) just 1 or 2 pixels, no drag occurs. when I move it further than a few pixels, the dragging kicks in

if this could somehow be extended to say 30 pixels, then that would fix this problem

I wonder why this was built into Windows in the first place. Who ever uses this anyway.

If you haven't tried X-Setup, it might let you do what you want. In the attached thumbnail the setting is for the Windows default of 4 but, in the description box it says you can "enlarge the rectangle to whatever you find comfortable (for example 16 x 16 for a 1280x960 resolution)."

It doesn't give a limit on the size but there must be one. I'm sure this could be done with a registry edit too, but I don't know what it is. Possibly, some one else will post the registry info needed.

If you're unfamiliar with X-Setup, be careful. You could inadvertently make some unsavory(to say the least) changes to your system.

    excellent, that did the trick!
    thanks very much, plastidust

thanks to that program I also found where it's stored in the registry:

    [HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-823518204-838170752-725345543-500\Control Panel\Desktop]

    (the bold part can differ)

The strings are called DragHeight and DragWidth
