I decided to disable the windows search feature. Is there an alternative program I can use to do windows search so I don't have to restart my computer every time I went to do a search. I just want a program that does searching for me that isn't always on and doesn't require me to restart every time I want to shut it down or start it up. And freeware. Thanks in advance.

    Greetings, brahman.

I know a lot of people have been recommending Everything search engine - I haven't used it myself, so I can't comment upon its effectiveness.

I'm curious: why are you having to reboot in order for Windows Search to work? What version of Search are you using?

I'm not saying to not use an alternative, but it seems like you should clear up that issue before adding a band-aid.

Every time I disable the search in windows 7 (64) the laptop prompts a restart. Do you use windows 7 (64)? It does this when I change several basic features on windows 7. This restarting process is listed as a natural function of disabling services on the black viper website. Though if I am wrong, I would like to hear from other windows 7 users who do not have to restart after changing this. To be clear about how I disable it, I go to.......Start-->control panel-->programs and features-->turn windows features on or off-->windows search(unchecked).........at this point it tells me that changes will only take effect after a restart.

And I couldn't find that program on major geeks......Does anyone know of one that is on major geeks?

Yes, I am using a Win 7 Home Premium 64-bit machine presently.

I can stop the Windows Search service via Admin Tools > Services without having to restart the machine.

Sorry I couldn't help you with your problem - you're welcome anyway, and good luck to you.

I did this............Administrative tools-->services-->Windows search(I stopped it as it was started, then turned delayed start to disabled) and after I did this I clicked on the start menu and it was still there. When you went through this process was yours still there? Or did it disappear?
