Disabling system restore

Hello, I am only somewhat computer literate and have a question about anti virus scanning and system restore. Yesterday my son renewed/updated his subscription for Norton Internet Security, then ran a scan. The scan found 3 trojans, deleted 2 and quarantined 1. Only after running the scan did we read about disabling system restore (by clicking on the information about the trojan and reading how to remove). Norton suggests that you disable BEFORE doing the scan, remove anything that is found and then re-activate system restore. We didn't disable SR beforehand. Can SR be disabled now that the scan/remove has been done to get rid of anything that might have been in SR. Will the updated version of NIS still be there? Thanks for your help.

Yes it can be disabled now. Then reboot and re-enable system restore. This will remove all restore points thus eliminating any infected ones. Disabling System Restore first is really a bad idea. If you do this and a scanning tool removes something that should not be removed, you have no fall back. It is really better to have an infected restore point rather than none at all if something goes wrong. The approach we take on Majorgeeks is to remove all malware problems first. Then make sure everything appears to be working okay. Then and only then do we toggle system restore.

The virus scanners just cannot remove anything in System Restore if it is enabled. Thus they tell you to disable it first so they don't wind up reporting a load of things that they are fixing when they really are not fixing them. We feel our approach is safer for the end user.

Thank you for the explanation chaslang! Is it a good idea to do disable/re-enable SR everytime you do a scan and it finds something? Thanks.

Not for minor stuff that could be found all the time. If you did that, you would never have any restore points and you may as well just leave it off if you were going to do that. You only really need to worry about major malware issues. Anything that can easily be cleaned with a scanner, would not be that big deal to reclean after doing a system restore.
