Disappearing programs

A problem I'm having is that I notice things like my internet explorer icon will disappear. The whole program is there but no icon. I open it and get brought right to i.e. properties, not the internet itself. I fixed it with my windows xp cd but have noticed that my calculator has disappeared. I first started noticing things when I couldn't open my Windows Media Player and a message saying wrong WMP version for the current windows version I had. Then my add remove programs disappeared but was still on my computer and in the registry. I got that back using a file from the internet but keep losing things. I still haven't found my Outlook express or calculator.

I did spyware scans like Adaware and spybot and free internet virus scans (I don't have one of my own right now since I let it expire and removed it). I can't seem to figure out what my problem is. Do I have a virus or what?

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Please follow the steps below:

    - Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ ME FIRST BEFORE ASKING FOR SUPPORT: Basic Spyware, Trojan And Virus Removal

Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.

    - Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.

After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps below:

    - Download HijackThis 1.99.1

    - Unzip the hijackthis.exe file to a folder you create named C:\Program Files\HJT

    - Do NOT run Hijack This from the Desktop, a temp folder, or a sub-folder of C:\Documents and Settings, or choose to run it directly from the downloaded ZIP file.

    - Before running HijackThis: You must close each of the following:your web browser, e-mail client, instant messenger, and programs like notepad, wordpad, MS Word etc. And any other unnecessary running programs.

    - Run HijackThis and save your log file.

    - Post your log as an ATTACHMENT to your next message. (Do NOT copy/paste the log into your post).

    Phew....all done

I followed all the steps as posted and found a few things like attune and backweb lite. I also was running hijack this and getting ready to post after all this work when my IE explorer icon disappeared and my calculator disappeared (both of which were just put back on by me minutes before.)

I'm also about to buy another antivirus since mine is expired. Which one do you think is the best? And which may help with the problem?

    Hijack this log is attached.

    Thanks

Do not remove Backweb/Backweb Lite it is needed by several programs on your computer and comes pre-installed on some. Removing Backweb will break several of the programs that were pre-installed on your computer.

    Attune you can remove.

Now scan with HijackThis and fix the following:
    Exit HijackThis.

    Now run Pocket Killbox:
Choose Tools > Delete Temp Files and click OK.

Run Killbox.exe. Paste the below filenames into KILL BOX one at a time. Check mark the box that says "Delete on Reboot" and checkmark the box "Unregister DLL" (If available) Click the RED X and it will ask you to confirm the file for deletion…say YES and when the next box opens prompting you to reboot now...click NO...and proceed with the next file. Once you get to the last one click YES and it will reboot. Note many of the file list below may not exist but we need to check for them anyway.
If Killbox does not reboot or you get a Pending Operations type error message just reboot your PC yourself.

Now boot into SAFE MODE open Windows Explorer navigate to and DELETE the following:
Now run CCleaner and goto C:\Windows\Prefetch and delete all files in this folder.

Now reboot in normal mode and post a new HJT log.
