Okay so as of last night my machine was working fine, and then when I went to start it up this morning, it got hosed and froze up on startup. I unplugged a couple things replugged them back in, and now nothing is booting up. Harddrive, CD-Rom drive, nothing. I was getting the error Disk Boot Failure

Now at first glance I thought maybe my primary harddrive died, but when I tried booting from a CD and that wouldn't work, then I figured it might be a motherboard issue.

My mother board is an "EPoX EP-MF570SLI Socket AM2 NVIDIA nForce 570 SLI MCP ATX AMD" with "AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200+ Windsor 2.6GHz 2 x 1MB L2 Cache Socket AM2 Processor ".

I was able to boot up after I held the escape key during immediate reboot and it asked me where to boot up from. Then when I selected my harddrive
it booted up fine like nothing ever happened. What I want to know is, why all of a sudden won't it boot up normally?

If anyone could help me that would be very much appreciated. I'm totally unsure what the problem is. Thank you in advance.

If there is anymore info you would need let me know.

    First things first,

    SAVE your data somewhere else.

Then delete manually your internet cache, temp files, recycle files......
    Then run Check Disk
    then run System file checker

You appear to be fairly pc savvy but if you need more details let us know

    Hi there,

Had a similar problem a while back:cry , picked up a virus that altered BIOS so instead of booting from partitioned OS on C drive it was trying to boot from elsewhere, asking for disc etc etc. To boot I had to cancel request then it would boot ok. To fix I got rid of the virus ( cant remember what it was called) Then I went back to last known good configuration, been ok ever since:major .
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307852 This is the address with instruction "how to revert to last known good configuration" Excuse me if you already know how to do this function.

    Kevin:wave .

went ahead and scanned the files for any errors and nothing came up. So it isnt' system related. I will scan for viruses next. Also, I'm using Vista, not sure if that will matter or not.

I did come up with a worm because of Limewire, but it seems to be unrelated to my problem. Any further suggestions?

I've figured out the problem. I had installed a SATA harddrive and what had happened was, the boot priority in the BIOS had the SATA drive listed first, which the SATA drive does not have my OS on it. So I had to switch priority and voila works fine now.

In a question unrelated to this topic, I was wondering if anyone knows how to change it so you can use a USB keyboard in BIOS... for whatever reason I can't figure this out. Everytime I have to do anything that involves BIOS I have to plug in an old keyboard that uses the standard keyboard/mouse port. I must be overlooking something.

Your bios should have something like
    'enable legacy usb devices'

only a very few bioses actually call it a keyboard!!!
