In Xp in disk cleanup do you folks leave Compress files and Indexing checked when you run the utility.? Is it a good idea to do it.? Also in indexing should you check folders and sub folders? I only have a 16 gig hard Drive and was wondering about this.

Oh yeah, it's a very good idea to run disk cleanup; especially if you're running a 16 gig HD.

It can potentially free up considerable amounts of hard drive space and using Disk Cleanup on a regular basis can significantly improve system performance. This MSKB Article describes all that the disk clean-up utility is capable of doing. However, I believe The Elder Geek's take on the disk cleanup utility is far better than Microsoft’s rather bland explanation. EG uses a step-by-step approach; explaining what each step does (with pics too).

Note: If you have any trouble running it or the disk cleanup tool stops responding while compressing old files; check out this MSKB Article for a "workaround."

Additionally, if you want to observe how much hard drive space that you're saving (in real time); download this Disk-Mem Panel v2.46 freeware tool. Using it you can see how much space you save. You can also use it afterwards to see how much memory different applications use. Suggestion: After you download it; drag the shortcut of it into the start-up folder. This tool is only a 142 Kb download; it uses ZERO resources and comes in very handy if you're "geek-inclined." ;)

    Good Luck!

Personally I never touch Compress files ( but if your running low on free space then its handy but, can suffer from a small amount of lag in re-compressing the compressed files if your CPU is a slow one )

, Indexing I turn off as in XP I have not seen any benefit unless you have a large database, but if you want to index the files for quicker seaching then yes check both options.
