Hello, I am having a problem with system restore. I did a manual back up of the system on drive D (RECOVERY) and there wasn't enough room on that drive (size 10 gb). Now drive D is full. I tried running Disk Cleanup but when the dialog box comes up saying "ARE YOU SURE YOU WANT TO DELETE ALL BUT THE LAST RESTORE POINT" I click on delete and nothing happens.

I don't want to compicate things but this all started when I turned on the computer and I got an error message saying that

WINDOWS CAN NOT START DO YOU WANT TO RUN MICROSOFT REPAIR (RECOMMENDED)

So I ran the repair utility and the the system loaded up normally after having a black screen for about 3 or 4 minutes. I got a repair message saying the system was repaired after a blue screen error.

The only other problem was that the avast aniti virus was disabled (latest free stripped down version) and I couldn't turn it back on or run a scan. I restarted the computer and after having the black screen for a few minutes windows loaded up but with the same above.

I then uninstalled Avast and installed the previous version (4.8) and updated it). the computer was now loading up normally. so I decided to backup the system using D: Recovery which led me to the not enough recovery space problem. This seems to be the only problem now.

Is there a way to remove the backup which failed because of not enough space or should I just re size D: from 10 to 15 or 20 gigs?

And does anyone have any idea's why Disk Cleanup wont work on System Restore (drive D )?

One last question, is AVAST 4.8 really obsolete? Because I like it better than the new version which seems to give you less protection.

    My computer is running:

    Vista Home Premium
    Intel core 2 quad
    3 GB MEMORY
    Avast
    SPYWARE BLASTER
    SPYBOT S&D
MALBYTES AND SAS Just as scanners
    SMART DEFRAG
WINDOWS INTERNET EXPLORER LATEST UPDATED VERSION

    Thanks in advance

    Hi GeekWannaB

First I must say that I'm not familiar with Vista, however,
It seems to me that maybe you're confusing System Restore with the
Recovery partition on your hard drive. If your computer came with Windows pre-installed with two partitions,
the D: Recovery partition is not meant to be used as a backup destination.
It's there so you can Restore the operating system and the software that came with the computer.
The restore process generally wipes out whatever is on C: drive and returns it to it's initial state.

If that is in fact the way your computer is configured, you should not try to reconfigure the D: partition. Also, that partition may be Protected and access is limited.

System Restore is a Windows facility that creates a backup of specific operating system files and, in Vista, some others as well.

I'm sure there is a way to remove what you added to D: but I won't try to advise you on that.

I am using Avast! 5.0.677 but I started with 4.8.
Don't know why you feel that version 5 provides Less protection.
I think it is an Improvement from 4.8 - just my opinion.

Hello mjnc, thanks for the reply. I hope there's a way. When I tried to restore the system when this first happened after restart, I would get an error message saying system restore failed until I uninstalled Avast. I ran a scan with 4.8 and it came up with a virus/worm JAVA:JADE-B [HEUR] Tuggoarffb.class. Avast was able to move it to the chest from it's original location but was unable to move it to the chest from another location (backupset 2011-1-7 173141\backup file).

My computer is working normally for now except every time I restart I get a message saying last backup failed not enough disk space.

So should I move this thread to malware removal?

with Avast 4.8 I would get a warning if a website was trying to send me malware with the new AVAST free 5 I apparently did not. I'VE been using the new version for a few months and it updates sometimes twice a day. With Windows Defender and all the other anti virus anti malware and spy ware I'm amazed that something actually was able to get through to my computer.

    thanks again

Sorry, I can't advise you about the failed restore error message.
There are ways to remove the Restore Point from the D: partition, but
I don't want to take the chance of telling you to do something that may damage
the other data that is stored there.

For the malware problem, I suggest that you go to READ & RUN ME FIRST Malware Removal Guide and at least do
the initial prep and scans with SuperAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes.
Read the instructions about how to configure each program before running the scan and save the logs from the scans.

For an online scan, I have also used TrendMicro HouseCall
Download the tool (32 bit) and save it (not the Beta), then close your browser and run the scanning tool.
They recommend that you use the 'Quick Scan' the first time.
The full system scan can take over an hour, but I have run that also.

    If problems persist:
Further cleaning instructions for Vista are here: Vista Malware Removal/Cleaning Procedure.
When you are done, post a message in the malware forum with your logs attached.
