    Hi Guys,

I sat here this arvo, and thought since I wasn't doing anything, i'd do a disk defrag, well, it did it apparently, but in under an hour, I have a 160GB Hard drive, with 60GB used, is this to quick?

My last PC, which was 2.8GHZ, only 266MHz diffrence from this machine, and only an 80GB hard drive, with 40GB used, took roughtly 3 hours to do a defrag.

Please let me know if this is normal or not, becuase to me it doesn't feel right. too quick.

Well I think it depends on when the last time you defraged was. The more files it has to move around the longer it will take. However if most of the files are already "defraged" it won't take to long. Did it say you need to defrag or did it say it's not necessary to defrag?

Defragging the disk is one of windows' so called 'idle tasks'. This means that whenever you do not use the computer for a while, it will start defragging. You can check your disk fragmentation level by pressing the 'Analyze' button in the disk defragmenter. If there are no red bits in the colored bar that appears, fragmentation is minimal and defragmentation will complete almost immediately.

If it takes 3 hours to defrag, you're not doing it often enough.

    Hi Guys,

Well to be honest, today was the very first time I ever defragged this computer!

Honestly, I never thought of it before, I was going through my Programs bar, and seen it, then thought, oh yeah this will give me a little increase.

How often should it be done? when I booted it up it said I should defrag, so I did, most of it was blue to begin with, tiny bit of green, 10% redish, rest was blue

how often you need to defrag depends on how often you move files around on your PC. How often you install and uninstall programs. if you just use your pc for say browsing the internet then not so often. if however you use your pc for gaming and install 2GB games and uninstall them frequently then you'd have to defrag more often.

Once or twice a month should be perfect for most users.

just a thought but was your old comp using FAT32 for the hard drive? All newer windows comps now use NTFS which will defrag a fair bit quicker than the old fat systems

No, my old PC was the same, just a slower CPU, Diffrent Board, and it was definetely NTFS
