    Hi,
I have just bought a new laptop from Dell for my girlfriend. She said she was having problems with the mouse cursor. It kept getting stuck on the right side of the screen. I rebooted the PC and went into task manager. Disk usage was at 100% for a couple of minutes and then recovered. I have taken a screen shot of Task Manager and resource manager and have included Bellarc also.

    Please can you help? Thanks.

    Hi

I see this a lot and with 3rd party security apps, so a quick test is boot to safe mode (F8 and safe mode with networking) and see how the PC works, if not uninstall Avira and see how the PC works.

Funnily enough I have just installed Avira after uninstalling Mcafee. I have always felt that Avira was less heavy on the system than Mcafee. I don't think it is Avira as the problem was happening without Avira being on the system. I installed Avira about 2 hours ago in response to the problem.

I uninstalled Catalyst Control Centre but the problem still exists. Should the disc usage be at 100% on startup. Is that normal as it does recover later?

Disk usage is relative: 100% of 10MB/s is 1/6th - 1/10th of the maximum throughput of a modern notebook HDD, the disk queue does look rather high though (lots of small, non-consecutive files being loaded); a 2.5" HDD should run to ~70-100MB/s when loading large, consecutive files.

Look out for the Dell crapware that's loading and use MCPR to ensure McAfee is completely removed.

I have already used the Mcafee removal tool. I have had a look in programmes and I can't work out what is needed or not.

Here ar some things in the add/remove programmes:

    Dell Product Registration
    Dell Touchpad
    Dell Update
    My Dell
    My Dell Client Framework
    Quickset64

Can I remove any of those?

I'd remove all but the Dell Touchpad first time around, the others don't really offer anything that isn't already built into Windows or can be accomplished by downloading directly from Dell's site.

    Some reading material:
    Dell bloatware
    Quickset64
    Dell Touchpad

Thanks. I have removed all but the touchpad. It seems to be a lot better. It stil utilises 100% but not for so long. A lot less than it was. Is there anything else I can do to stop it going to 100% at all? Thanks for your help :)

EDIT It recovers more quickly at initialstartup but then rises back up to 100% and then fluctuates around 70% before rising again.

I have looked at the startup tasks and they are as follows:
    EPSONPX730WD (I have disabled)
HYDRAVISION DESKTOP MANAGER (I have disabled)
    AVGNT (I have left enabled)
AVIRA SYSTRAY (I have left enabled)
    BCSSYNC (I have disabled)
    BTMTRAYAGENT (I have disabled)
    HOTKEYSCMDS (I have disabled)
    IASTORICON (I have left enabled)
    IGFXTRAY (I have left enabled)
    PERSISTENCE (I have left enabled)
    RTHDVBG (I have left enabled)
    RTHDVCPL (I have left enabled)
    CCleanerSkipUAC (I have disabled)
Optimize Start Menu cache Files (I have left enabled)
Synaptics Touchpad Enhancements ( I have left enabled)

Ensure that you're interpreting the graphs correctly: the scaling of the disk activity graph in Resource Manager is variable, in your earlier screenshot 10MB/s was 100% on the graph, that's really only 10-14% of maximum throughput.

Get further screenshots to illustrate what's happening now, one as soon as you can post-boot and another, say after 5 minutes uptime. Expand Disk Activity (that's the second section, minimised in your screenshot) to list in order of highest Write activity. Also check there for any process with higher than Normal Priority set.

    These 3 I'd disable:
It's quite likely, as David suggested, that it's Avira creating excessive checking and slowing down Windows' task completion rate ("No, you can't write it to disk yet, I haven't finished check it!"). W8/8.1 is well protected with the stock Defender and inbuilt firewall activated, add Winpatrol, SpywareBlaster and Malwarebytes (Free versions) into the mix and you'll get ~95%+ of the current protection with a big reduction in impact.
